We've been running a derv S40 for ~70k mi now. It's been a pleasant experience, as you mentioned, a nice balance between focus handling and Volvo wafting.

They're particularly sensitive to good tyres and a good alignment, a hunter alignment will be money well spent when you replace the tyres.

Our PAS rack started leaking at the back end of 2019, the leak got worse and worse quite quickly, leaving embarrassing rainbows of oil around the car when parked in the wet! Ended up replacing the whole rack with a refurbished one bought on eBay. One Saturday to take the leaking rack out so I could check I was buying the right one, then fitted the new one the next Saturday. Much simpler job than it sounds and there are a couple of youtube videos on the subject.

Love the colour of yours too!

Thanks, I had a little look at that video of the rack and you’re right, nowhere near as bad as anticipated, and with a helpful American man explaining things too.

How have you found the reliability on the diesel? I heard many a horror story on various forums but can’t work out if it’s the usual case of people only going on forums when something has gone wrong etc?
If I remember correctly we paid £130 for the recon. rack, which included sending our old one back to them.

A mixed bag really on the diesel really. It's definitely not been shed money to run (EGR, DPF, Clutch and Flywheel have all been done under our ownership), but it's always been a case of not really knowing what we'd replace it with, other than another of the same! The actual engine (minus all the emmissions stuff) has been good, just over 160k now and runs well. I'd go for a petrol if I had the choice though, unless you're towing like we are! The 1.8 petrol I test drove seemed powerful enough.

I do have a Readers' Cars thread if you're interested in seeing somebody spend too much money on an old car.... rolleyes it's due an update actually.
