Guarantee delivery of import car?

Hello all. I'm looking at importing a car from somewhere in the world that does RHD. Nothing has been found yet that floats my boat but expecting the export country to be one of the ones that is usually seen as being a bit iffy. Does anyone have any experience of dealing with payment guarantees or letters of credit or other ways of ensuring my cash doesn't go for walkies? Thanks.
