Hi, current TV is an over 10 year old 50” Sony LED wall mounted on a chimney breast. The room is large and open plan although when sitting down I’m about 12’ away. If at the table, then this increases to 30’ away at which point the remote struggles and it feels small.

I think I really need a 65” but that will fill almost the entire width of the chimney breast which I don’t really want to do. Placing it to the only viable side of the chimney means it wouldn’t be viewable from the kitchen.

A 60” would be ideal but no one makes them! I’m concerned that 55” despite a c20% increase in viewing area won’t seem much bigger but I would get the benefit of a new TV which should be a load better (shouldn’t it?). The sound in mine is awful and have an equally crappy looking sound bar hung underneath it. All cables are hidden.

Anyone made this small move and seen benefit?

The first thing you need to do in reality is work out the physical size of your new TV compared to the old one.
I would be willing to bet a modern 55 inch TV would be considerably smaller than your current TV, and a modern 65 may not be that much bigger.

I know what you mean, but they’re not for everyday watching.

Thanks for the replies. Although quite old my current TV only has a thin bezel. The dreadful sound bar (which my wife hates) makes it seem bigger but a 55” will take up more overall space but at least it would be all TV.

Pic attached shows yours truly in my usual viewing spot. My wife sits a similar distance away but on her own chair obviously 😃

Picture might demonstrate why I think a 65” might be just too big. As you can see the bracket is not a flush one and I may change this as I don’t use the cantilever function much at all.

I looked at the Phillips 58’s but they seem to be last years models and a lower spec. My budget is about £1500

Cheers

Flush bracket and a 65” and you’re away. Especially if you can do without the soundbar.

Last years LG Oled 55s are all being discounted just now for this year's models arriving soon.
Good time to buy.

Get the 65 if you can make it fit. We watch a 65” oled from about 6 feet and although it seams massive at first, you get accustomed to it quick enough. I would actually have a 75 oled if they were not so expensive.

No offence to you, but TV's over fireplaces make my neck hurt.

Reminds me of being in the front row of a cinema (remember cinemas?)

My pet hate too! Please try & keep your tv-viewing at head-height level as best you can. Your eyes & neck will thank you. smile

Haha, I know - it’s not ideal, is it? We’re used to it now and the only other viable position (on the dresser base to the right) means we can’t see the TV from the kitchen so I think we’re stuck with it. I really don’t like it being that much of a focal point but reality is that we watch a lot of TV so needs to be viewable from every location

Seems 65” on a flush bracket is the way...

Yes, looking at the image I'd certainly be tempted to move the TV a whole lot lower. My "over fireplace" installation is done with TV as low as possible and the speaker ABOVE the TV rather than below it - worked out very well.
