£7000, 2nd Car (Young driver)

Hi, Im after a new car and want something a bit nippy but also nothing that will cost and arm and a leg on insurance, as I am only 19 and have 2 years NCB. I would like something a bit different and not the usual 1.0 Ecoboost fiestas despite the fact it ticks all the boxes. Any recommendations are appreciated.

When I was still on my R plates here in N.I I bought a Peugeot 208 GTI it was brilliant. 208bhp and 0-60 in 6.5s means it is quick.
Steering wheel is small but as long as you know that you set it low and view the dials over the top of it instead of through you won’t have any problems.
Worth a test drive. Also Clio R.S, Corsa VXR, Fiesta ST and Polo GTI to consider as they would be the next logical step.

Suzuki swifts have always been good value, especially the sport. The last gen are falling into the sub 7k category now with reasonable miles (2013 plate with 36k for example).
They came loaded with kit as standard and are peppy (1.6)/cheap to run so could be worth a look. They've got a great reputation for reliability and good handling etc.
Others off the top of my head are the Skoda Fabia (Monte Carlo edition with extra kit), Mazda 2 sport, hyundai I30 active or if you're into funky looks something like a Citroen C4 cactus.

I was in the same situation a year ago except with a 3.5k budget and I went for a mk2 focus st3. I can't recommend it enough, I upgraded from a 2003 fiesta.
Very comfortable and more than quick enough, it cost be about 1k to insure the first year. The only things to consider is get a looked after model as people like to thrash them, the st3 with leather has 4 seats so if you need 5 go with the st2 and you don't get the best mpg if you're driving hard but its alot of fun.

I bought a 2.0 mk3 MX5 when I was 19 was cheap to insure, with a few grand of work, (~185hp, Suspension and Tyres) it was brilliant down a B road and even better on track.
I've got a '14 Swift Sport I picked up for £4.5k in November last year. Can't recommend the Swift enough if im honest, perfectly comfy day to day with Bluetooth, cruise, LED headlamps etc but still fun when you push on, although it's not a rocket in the slightest
