I'm looking for a good method to clamp the low pressure input hose to the power steering pump. At the moment I've used Jubilee clips but they seem to always weep. The metal stub that the rubber hose fits to is quite short so options are limited.

I'm looking to find a decent brand of clip - Jubilee type or fuel hose clip type - and then cut back the hose and refit again.

Any thoughts please on what's best?

Also is it best to remove the pump to get good access when doing this job? It's all a bit awkward in that area.

Hi Dalamar, you could try a t bolt hose clip which is like a larger fuel line clip, these tighten more uniformly around the hose, have you replaced the hose? It might of gone brittle and misshaped with the heat. I replaced all mine at my local hydraulics place for £30 that included new banjo's on the high pressure side and new hose clips wink

The problem is that the hose compresses under the clip and hardens, tightening won't help once this has happened. You can add an additional clip just below the existing clip where the hose has not been previously compressed, that'll give you another 10 years.

I’ve used some wellseal jointing compound on problem hoses before, just a light smear.
Quality hose helps too.

I double clipped there and both ends of the U bend. That gave me several years leak free. In the end I replaced the hoses with quality hoses from TVR Parts, job done

Use decent hose clips to ensure even compression and wider contact patch

Thanks Bobfather. I’ll take your advice and try a Mikalor Supra W4 21-23mm clip which is 20mm wide. I’ll recut the end first as it looks a bit dog-eared now and will let you know how it goes.

Does anyone know the internal diameter of the host that goes to the u-bend above?

Edit to add I see the Motaclan stock 1/2" and also Feed hose from power steering reservoir to pump. 5/8" internal bore anyone know which is the one to replace to the U where it commonly leaks? I've not got my car with me at the mo hence not being able to measure. I also need to know how long to order if I need the latter, former says 1.5m.

I had a look at my old emails and I bought a 1m length of 16mm power steering hose from Hosemaster. Part number R6-16-1. Hope this helps.

Perfect thanks. How tricky a job is it. At the reservoir side that looks simple enough but I've not viewed where it connects to after the U.

It is a bit of a faff. I put plenty of newspaper down around the engine and drained the reservoir before removing the line up to the pump. The main problem I had with this job is getting a good fitment and leak free connection back onto the stubby tube on the pump. A good quality Miklor hose clamp should do it.

Once you’re happy you got everything buttoned up and the reservoir is refilled then you’ll need to purge the air out of the system. I did this by putting the car on jack stands at the front so that the front wheels are off the ground. Then start the car and you’ll hear lots of whining from the pump. Moving the steering from fully left to right many times while topping up the reservoir will gradually purge the system. The fluid may turn pink with air in it. Not a problem. Keep going until the noise dies down and don’t keep the steering on full lock in either direction for long.

Great thanks again. I've already ordered some of those Miklor clamps as it currently has jubilee clips and I didn't want to re uses those. Good tip on the newspaper, I'm not working on it at home so I have to take all my tools and consumables with me so Newspaper added to the list I have a syringe to remove what I can from the reservoir so hopefully that will keep the mess to a minimum.
