Mitsubishi Evos. Worth the money?

Hi there guys.

In about 2 years time I'll be on the lookout for a new car. Not fully sure what yet but I'd love to consider an Evo. My preference would be an Evo 8 but anything from a Evo 7 to an Evo 9 would suffice.

I was wondering if anyone has owned one/ does own one and could tell me if they genuinely are worth the price that they're demanding these days. I've seen Evo 7s for around the 15k but I've seen some Evo 9s up past 30k. I'd be looking at spending from 15k - 20k depending on condition and milage.

If anyone can guide me with what I should know before settling and looking for one I'd massively appreciate it. I think running costs and rust are the key things I should lookout for but at the moment I just want to know if they're worth buying. Thanks

Head over to Mitsubishi Lancer Register forum.....lots of info on Evo's over there. You'll be hard pressed not to find someone with an Evo that doesn't rave about them, superb cars in many ways, and have recently been increasing in value.

In my opinion yes ! But do your homework know what to look for theres alot of scrap out there and alot are still wanting top dollar ask on forums or if your lucky a local specialist may help you on your hunt

Haven't you got a twenty page thread about wanting to buy a Golf R or M140i in two years time already?
Why don't you wait a couple of years and decide what you want then?

Very true, I'm considering a lot of cars ( like the M140 and Golf R you mentioned) but I don't know whether I should consider something completely different like an Evo. A few people on my other forum have recommended them to me but I just wanted to see if anyone has one and could tell me whether I should forget getting something like a Golf R and go for an Evo instead.

I don't want to get into too much detail but if I was to purchase one I'd rather do it sooner than later before the prices become way too steep. Having seen one at my tuner's garage they just look the business to be honest and everyone who seems to have one do speak highly of them so I'd love to know if they're worth it or not.

Thank you, Paul. Yes I don't live far from Indigo GT who are a very well-respected Evo specialist

They're great but my 8 is now 18years old, it's very analogue compared to a golf r and very much my 3rd car for 1 day a week commutes on dry spring\summer days. I wouldnt want to have it as daily driver..

I would go for the Evo. Some people seem to turn into a right wker when they drive the R.

Yeah this is one of my main concerns, the running costs. Age doesn't really bother me particularly as long as the underside is in good shape ( i.e no rust ) and the service history is good

Evo for me aswell evan tho golf r and s3 are great cars .. they are everywhere and mostly driven like ****s I seem to get them glued to my bumper I just move over let them past and say look theres another golf

Looks to me that they are £20k plus for a good one and no they aren't worth that. They are cheaply made, maintenance intensive and ime unreliable

In their day nothing went down a B road like one.

To me, if your not sure if you want an Evo or a Golf R then maybe just get the Golf. It will be better in a objective way.

You don't buy an Evo for rational reasons, you buy it because it's what you're into, you wanted one as a kid or nostalgia or whatever. Like a Cosworth or an Integrale or something, you don't expect perfection.

They are worth it though and they will never be this cheap again (apart from the 10 maybe).

It's just finding a 10 without the SST gearbox. I'm not against automatics I just think the evo was always a car that needed a manual box (imo)

Yeah I have wanted an Evo for ages but I'm at that point where I could get into one. It's just the lack of daily driving could render the car pointless to someone like me. But If people on here day it's worth it then I'm happy to go ahead with it and just bring an Evo out on nice weekends/ hot summer days. I'd keep it protected in the garage most of the time.

The missus would prefer me to get an M140i but there's just something about an Evo isn't there

Don't know if anyone here is aware of him but Lee Lockwood's old Evo is being sold on Facebook marketplace. Not a massive fan of the current wrap but it's got a decent spec list including being mapped by Simon Norton. What do you guys think of it?

I had a quick look around yesterday went on the MLR and AT and good ones seem to be around £20k

When it comes to performance cars there is a key phrase to remember

"If you can't afford a good one you really can't afford a bad one"

I bought my 40,000 mile Evo 6 for £8k and put about the same into it in the 3 years I had it
