Ive wondered this for a while, and there must be an answer...sure someone here will know... Why dont the government utilise the vast number of motorway and road bridges around the country as advertising boards? Newspaer/TV advertising is bl**dy expensive (a quarter page in the telegraph/Times for one day is in the region of £8500), and theres this set of ready made, doing nothing, large flat structures which seem to have ''revenue raising without screwing the motorists'' all over them. I mean they even have excellent quantitative data on the exact number of vehicles which pass by each and every one (certainly on main roads anyway) every day - and its rather a lot higher than the broadsheet distribution figures. It cant be ''it takes your eyes off the road'' - seeing as there are signs, cameras and of course billboards everywhere (will never forget the 26 foot high Eva Herzigova ) also cant be logistical - wouldnt be difficult to get frontage on each bridge and replacing ads would also be easy... so...any ideas anyone? I must be missing something obvious and will no doubt feel stupid when its pointed out but....! cheers Night

the buggers would probably hide cameras behind them

oh yes it can. Speeds on M-ways are a tad higher than on roads currently equipped with billboards. (You don't really think that SIGNS are a hazard, do you?!? ) At least I assume that's why. Personally I reckon they might actually IMPROVE safety on the highway - keep everyone awake and less bored/tetchy. Also you'd be more likely to spot vans with lasers pointing out of them, so that would impact the revenue figure slightly.

Knowing this poxy gvmt, they'd only put "SPEED KILLS" ads up anyway.

I think there is some legislation preventing advertising billboards on certain types of roads.

well that isnt really an answer is it? just a reason...after all, the government makes the legislation! Matt...no I dont think signs are hazards except the 'tank crossing ones'! but they do make you take your eyes off the road. and lets face it, the average motorway is long, straight, and when you're horizon scanning, you see the bridges from miles away...so could see the ads too. Surely safer than driving round central london with its twisty roads, parked cars, lunatic taxis, idiot pedestrians, suicidal moped riders etc...and coming face to face with a billboard showing that fat-tongued, scooter-riding, soul-selling, pukka speaking, mockney twat from Sainsburies??!! I was gutted when they dropped that flower box thru the roof of his VW camper in one of the ads - should have been something *much* bigger and heavier if you ask me......
