It's amazing how negative this nation is, and people on this board.
Compare the comments about the Olympics from UK people:
"It'll never work", "Blair's a liar", "my tax pays for this..", "why should London benefit", "we can't handle the transport"
With one guy from Sydney:
"We still feel the after effects of the Olympics, and every time I pass the site, I have a big smile on my face."
We really could do with being a bit less miserable. Live8, Olympics, any sport you care to mention, politics, transport.. So many people seem content (or determined) to sit on their bums complaining about how unfair it all is, how their money is being wasted, how nothing works.. and by sitting there whinging, it all comes true.
We build great buildings, fantastic cars, have beautiful countryside, [b]can[/b] cook amazing food, great bands, theatre, comedy, art, literature, research, technology.
But if the whingers are too busy putting it all down, and won't get off their seats to support the things we do so well, is it a suprise if all these great things get overrun by chavs, happy eaters, nissan micras and mariah carey? People put their necks on the line and are instantly branded egotists. Make money through your work and you're branded as (a)lucky and (b)a git.
It's not as if any society is going to be all flowers and excellence - the day to day grind turns the wheels and for every shining talent there's a dozen big brother contestants. But we're obsessed with how miserable things are, and just cannot celebrate when someone does that little bit better.
So cheer up you bunch of :censored:. Let life's disappointments fade away and focus on the high points. Praise someone today, and plan to go somewhere special this weekend.

The truth is that the whingers against ideas are always the one's who shout loudest, so you will always see and hear them.
I want us to win the Olympic bid, not only for the new sports facilities it will bring but also the greater interest in sport and success it will bring, hosts have always done better than they normally do and kick starts new interest in children to compete. Plus it'll mean Paris don't get it, not so much the people but Chirac, the slimey piece of entrail.

actually they aren't much better off than people in London. Still it's much more fun to cynically criticise and complain rather than look on the bright side, comedians always look at the worst things. Anyway being miserable is what give Britian it's charm, much better than those annoyingly perpeutally happy Americans.

Re-read my post. I'm not trying to justify the Olympics, just pointing out the difference in attitude. The Sydney Olympics was marked by the real enthusiasm of the locals, whereas if we get it, I bet someone will complain that the acts that open the event are benefiting from increased sales.
As far as tax and public services are concerned, yes we could do better, but have you seen the tax on cars in Denmark, the cost of medical services in America, the bureaucracy of France, the suicide rate of Sweden, the regulatory framework of Germany, the social collapse of parts of Japan... the list of things that could be better is endless, why not set out to try to make things better? Just because we can't do it all at once, doesn't mean that picking on one area and having a go is wrong. Sure, high tax and crap trains - why does that make the Olympics bad, or debt relief a bad thing?

that does surprise me, especially when it comes to health care. For example, if our next baby (due any day now) was born in Sydney I wouldn't expect the
(a) lack of a space on the delivery ward
(b) lack of midwife to look after my wife
(c) blood stained floor that didn't get cleaned for the whole week we were in the maternity ward
(d) chance of getting MRSA

But seriously I presume that being a Londoner I will be made to pay an additional tax to pay for this. Why should I be forced to pay more ?. I would love to see London host the 2007 world naked three legged race, it will only cost you all £100, I wish I had the power to make you all pay for it.

Sports day for the nation will give us nothing but a few under utilised stadia.
With almost 200,000 homeless on the streets of London a good percentage of which are ex servicemen spending all this money so a bunch of fat man can sit on their arses criticising the best sportsman on the planet strikes me as a bit of a frivolous expenditure to say the least.

I must admit I am in a very cynical mood today, fed up to back teeth with the way this country seems to be going.
I agree with what you have regarding attitudes. But certainly my attitude is tainted by all the other stuff going on at present, feral youths, laughable judicial system, the numerous tax changes which have been touted (pay per mile, council tax rebranding etc). Perhaps I am missing your point, but how is hosting the olympics picking one area and making it better ?.
BTW none of this is intended as an attack on any individual postings, just my rather depressing opinion.

Yes you're right - all we'll get is massive regeneration of a part of London that has been all but abandoned in places. Just a few million ploughed into the public transport infrastructure. Only a massive boost for tourism that has suffered immensely since 9/11. I'm sure the knock on effects will be entirely negative, that the homeless will be ignored and sports in this country will be totally unaffected by the Olympics. It won't bring in a penny of revenue and once it's over the parks and stadia will rot and rust, unused.

When we need our local Hospital the treatment is very poor. If we want something urgently from our local health service I need to go private.
Our local schools are very bad indeed.
Don't know where you live Donut, perhaps I should move there.
Of course we don't have it as bad as Africa. In Africa the infant mortatilty rate is very high (don't know the figure), does that mean if ours was only marginally better we should be grateful as "it's not as bad as in poor Africa".
As our next game why don't we compare apples and oranges.
