2010 TTS/S5 experiences / alternatives

Good Evening all,

My ST goes back to ford in a few months and im looking to spend around 8-11k on a petrol coupe/convirtable. I was thinking about the 2010 TTS/S5, are they similar in terms of costs/reliability? Was wondering if the S5 would be better as the v6 is less stressed although it is more bargey.

Any other reccomendations are welcome (was also looking at 2015 Mx5 2.0's as they can be found for 10k,) much slower but cheaper to run!

Good question!

Most of my cars have been FWD so im wanting to try rwd/awd. Definitley dont want another hatch and I dont really need practicality. I love a great sounding car (hence the v6 S5) But I dont want to go much slower than my ST, the 2.0 MX5 is as steady as id want to go. Hoping whatever I get can acheive 30MPG on a run too, dont mind mid/high 20s in normal use.

Im not commuting any more so its just for rare use and runs on snake pass/ York moors once lockdown is over. Im not a massively skilled track driver or anything like that so 7/10ths at most, wouldnt even say I can get the best out of the ST, just enjoy the grip and exhaust noise

Just added the 2012 SLK350 to the list as after looking at some youtube vids these sound great and are pretty nippy!

At this price point you'll only get a V6 if you go for the convertible as all coupes will still be 4.2 V8's (which sound lovely) which would be where my money would go :

Which ST do you have and what do you like/dislike about it?

Thinking of it that way may help you decide which direction to go. I had an E92 325i which was a nice car but also very heavy and not much fun to chuck around. My current mk7.5 fiesta ST3 is better in almost every way. Okay it's a step down in quality and only has 4 cylinders but the drive more than makes up for it and I don't miss BMW running costs.

I wouldn't touch a TTS again unless you love understeer, rather have the S5 more fun and more power but bit heavy due to the v8.

I cant think of anything worse to hammer over the snake pass than an S5 IMO per the OP's needs

Sorry for the steady reply, my current Fiesta is a 1.5 3pot ST2 with the diff, surprisingly the exhaust note is pretty decent, its averaging 39mpg over 16k miles and gives you massive confidence in the twisties.

Theres not much I dont like about it to be fair, apart from the fact it looks ugly from the back

I think looking through other threads etc you guys are right with the S5 being a bit too heavy etc. Think I just liked the idea of having one (havent really had a big heavy car before so didnt think of how understeery etc it would end up being) Dont get me wrong im not going to be wringing the cars neck anyway but I do still want it to be resonably fun.

Any understeer on the TTS can easily be resolved with a rear ARB..I’d rather enjoy taking mine over the Yorkshire moors!

I’ve had it regularly serviced at an indy..made sure I changed water pump/belt..Haldex service with filter..as with most things ..preventative rather than repair!

Ive also had the wiper motor and window regulator changed as they were showing as intermittent faults on a scan..can’t think of anything else of the top of my head..it’s been a good car for me!

Mines a 2011 by the way.
