Difference in quotes

Not sure if this is the right places to post this, but I'm sure somebody on here will have a view on this!

We've just had some work done in our office, up grading the network cabling and the power sockets. The boss of the company we used didn't visit our office but in his quote mentioned nothing about an upgrade to our distribution board.

So the second day of the job, an electrician turns up, turns all our power off and swaps the board.

Once the job is done, the bill comes in £500 more then the original quote. The distribution board is the addition cost, something we weren't quoted on or told about until that morning. No explanation was given that it would cost extra.

Do we have to pay, do we have any rights in this kind of situation. The work had to be done to allow the other upgrades, but nobody told us about it and they never visited our office beforehand.

Did he give you a quote or an estimate?

Was anyone consulted about the requirement for this upgrade at all?

Would the upgrade works have been successful/possible in the first place without the new board?

was there any mention that it might be needed or that the quote was subject to the right equipment being fitted already?

AFAIK If you signed a contract of supply with them and they did not advise of any additonal costs and just "did the work anyway" then you just much hold up the contract and say "thanks for the free upgrade"

Did his original quote have E&OE on it? It means Errors & Omissions Excepted. This means he can add the extra cost on if he missed (Omitted) to add something

Ask exactly why the board was changed, why it wasn't in the quote, and tell him that you're not going to pay for it and they can bloody well come and remove it.
