War of the Worlds - Spoiler within but indicated

Anyone seen this yet?

What do people think. I think it was ok, quite interesting in parts.

However I do think the film lost the plot when he met Tim Robbins in the cellar. What was all that about???

I found it very funny when they stayed sheltered in the basement in the first house. Tom gets up, takes a walk outside, there is a passenger jet on top of the house amongst other things. Other houses smashed up, debri everywhere but.......

He fetches the car they drove to the house in and its fine!! ha ha ha :rofl:

How odd!

The way the aliens died at the end was quite a logical ending, but was really really abrupt.

It made me laugh when he walked up to his ex wife and the house she came out of had all the glass in still and looked perfect. Even though the street was messed up and there were smashed cars everywhere!! :hehe:

On the whole quite an ok film to start with, but it steadily lost the plot towards the end!

The Tim Robbins bit was the same as the Artilleryman in the book and the Jeff Wayne album - designed to show how the invasion was affecting people's mental stability, although really it would have been better if Tim Robbins was a deserter.

They survived the aircraft hit because they were underground.

The houses at the end hadn't seen any alien activity.

The cars in the street had broken down when the EMPs struck.

It was strange that only his truck worked when all the others had their engines fried. Also when they drove out from the airplane crash, tons of debris everywhere - lucky for them the road was totally clear!!

I did think it ended a little too abruptly

Good film though, rather like independence day.

Watched Sin City the other day - really good film

I understand that including the scene with Tim Robbins was crucial as it was from the book, but the way it was done just seemed odd to me. I agree with your comment that he should have been a deserter or something.

What I was getting at with the house under the jet was the fact that the car was still intact!! It had been left outside in the driveway, yet was totally fine even though carnage had rained down on the area!! Made me laugh a bit.

When the vehicles all fail, Manny? is asking Tom Cruise if he has any ideas, Tom shouts to him 'try the solenoid'. When hes coming back, Manny says 'hey you were right, it was teh solenoid' or words to that effect, as hes obviously replaced it.

Can't explain the car/plane thing though, although not everything was demolished (lots of houses still standing, including much of theirs).

EMP only wrecks electrical items with currrent flowing in them. There's a fair chance if your electrical stuff was turned off then it wouldn't be too badly damaged...

Aside from that, and the way the aliens had planned for 1 million years, yet had forgotten about bugs, and their unexplained turning off of their shields when they were feeling a bit unwell, and that cruise and the girl manage to walk across an entire state with no food or water, and that cruise managed to swim out of a river with a girl on his back while wearing all his clothes and his shoes, and they didn't get hypothermia, and about another 10 plot holes, it was OK.

I saw the movie tonight. I have to say it was a bit better than I expected, having read a few reports on PH and other places. Typical Spielberg - sharp back-lighting, a young kid, etc. I liked the beginning with Cruise in his car, with a V8 engine in his house. Also, he didn't know any lullabies just a car song. I thought the sound and SFX were pretty good. The bit with Tim Robbins went on for too long, I felt. There's was definitely a case of jumping on the 9/11 bandwagon in New York at the beginning. Overall, I'd give it a 7/10, so I'll probably buy the DVD when it comes out. An okay film, not a classic. A little less corny than Independence Day, but not much.

No, you just have to watch that bit again (after the lightning), and you'll notice the dialogue, and when Cruise returns to the house and hunts for a car.....
