I’ve just been topping the screen wash up on the Mrs 20 plate Audi Q2. She’s a nurse so the car has been getting regular runs during either lockdowns but I thought I’d check the oil and saw this. I know you can get Mayo build up due to condensation, and i phoned my local Audi dealer who is 30 seconds away, they have checked this morning and said this is normal due to condensation, but it looks like an awful lot to have a build up of.

The car is 5 months old and done 4,500 miles.

I know Audi say this is normal but i'm not convinced.

I guess on the plus side, this is a lease car, so not my problem anyway but it doesn't look good. Its all up the dipstick too!

Thank you

Definitely doesn't look normal to me. Have you tried cleaning the dipstick, driving the car for say 15 mins and getting up to temp, then checking it again?

Hi

No I haven’t but I’ll give it a wipe off before the car is driven for the rest of the week

It looks like an oil and water emulsion, I’d take it straight to a garage for a second opinion.

That looks like the car needs a good hard run to get the oil temp good and hot. Commonly known as an "Italian tuneup"
Is the car diesel or petrol?

It’s diesel but it’s not been parked up much as the Mrs is a community nurse so has been getting good regular runs

Has it lost any coolant?

The first thing I'd do is an oil change as that won't be lubricating anything properly. I'd ask the car provider to do the change and also suggest you save a sample.

No way it should be like that if being used like that as it will have been properly warmed each time. Definitely get an oil change as someone else said and see if it comes back

It’s a lease and Audi say it’s normal so they won’t change the oil just yet!

That does not seem ok. Some emulsification to be expected in cold westher and short journeys but not that bad.
Get the oil changed or at least get a sample taken and sent off for analysis. You'd be looking for traces of glycol, and/or high levels of potassium or sodium.

Are these all short distance stop/start journeys between clients & the car doesn't get up to normal running temperature as would be the case on longer continuous trips?

I'm no expert (other than being a bit of a dip stick myself) but in 40+ years of dipping oil I've never seen that. As others have said, needs checking.

These are journeys to schools so continuous journeys. Audi say it’s normal so won’t change the oil

You need to take that to a different garage as that is 100% not right.

I would also be tempted to send a pic to Audi UK & mention your concerns about the garage.

This is a good point....remember the guy at the Audi Dealer telling you it's fine is not the same as Audi telling you it's fine.

This

Plus, I would ensure you keep good photographic evidence, and copies of all emails and letters.

That engine needs attention urgently.

What I would sugggest though, is wipe that dipstick and then recheck immediately, and take photos again. Is the level high as well as contaminated (appears to be contaminated).
