I'm in the market for a new motor and will probably keep my current 987 Boxster for weekend top down fun.

I want something quick that sounds great and is luxurious but also engaging to drive. I think I've narrowed it down to either an M6 Gran Coupe or M4 Comp (although a W205 C63 Estate is also on the shortlist)

Which would you buy and why?

Previous history includes e46 & 92 M3's and an M2.

The M6 appeals as it's 4 door and looks great but I think the M4 would be better to drive. I'd consider a saloon M3 but feel they're over priced like for like.

M4 Comp:

I just found a great car on Auto Trader.

If you are keeping the Boxster I'd go M6 all day long.

The F10 platform cars are fantastic, even a humble 520d is a great place to be, comfortable and capable.
I have driven an M5 F10, spent 7 years in 530d's and given that the M6 GC shares all the underpinnings it would be a fabulous car to own.

The only reason not to do so, and to buy the M4 would be when you want to have some fun... But you are keeping the Porsche, so it's a no-brainer to me.

M6 as a GT car. Porsche Boxster as a toy.

Would the M4 be much different to the M2? Same engine etc.

I had the original version not the competition so the N55 Not the S55 in the M3. The biggest issue I had with the M2 was the low rent interior ... I liked everything else about it.

That M4 looks pretty good. It's got full leather as well, so will be a world away from the interior in the M2 you had.

I'd go for the M4 myself - I loved mine - but the M6 is a very different proposition so suppose it depends on what you're intending to use it for. The M4 is harsh and raw in comparison to the M6, but I'd argue that makes it much more fun to drive for pleasure.

I felt the same when I went to look at the original M2 - couldn’t bring myself to pay what was needed when the interior looked so poor.
I now have the Comp and all my original thoughts are out the window - just the seats alone make a massive difference to the feel.

As an aside, we had an F80 M3 for 3 years prior to me getting the M2, and I so much prefer the 2, it’s really so much better ( interior aside, granted).

If you're after noise, my M4 Comp was a disappointment coming from a S204 C63 but that's to be expected with less than half the cc and PPFs. Road noise drowns out any decent engine noise.

The M4 is a better all round car for my needs and do like despite the above.

If you're keeping the other car which is a great handling car, maybe the wafting powerhouse of an M6 might be more appealing?

I have an M6 and it is a cracking car, but it is not the most engaging (given that it is ~2 tonnes).

You have the Boxster for a Sunday morning drive, the M6 is the perfect foil - a powerful GT that can still handle well when pushed.

Arguably an M4 could mean you get rid of the Boxster and consolidate, but if you have no intention of doing that, the M6 is fabulous value for money.

Had the M6 Gran Coup, nice car finished very well, way above any M4 and just for your info, the M4 does NOT come with full leather, that will cost you.

This^

I ran an E90 M3 alongside a 911 for three years and I found that the 911 got used less and less as there was a lot of similarities between the cars. So if I were making your choice, I’d go M6 as it provides more differentiation to the Boxster.

I’ve had my M6 GC now for 3 years. Great interior and a car with a very broad range of abilities.

Cue a couple of gratuitous photos - at the top of the Stelvio Pass

And parked on Lake Como

I have had m240i (2018) before I wanted to add a full M to the garage. I test drove OG M2 and M4 and was not particularly impressed, probably more disappointed with the M4, the sound was just weird and the interior was just almost identical to M240i and it has a non touch screen drive. I have added M6GC Comp to the garage, though it is big but drives small.
It is composed and taut and that V8 rumbling on downshift is enough to own the car. It is very fast and driving it in Manual Mode taking it to almost red line before shifting gear would make driving an experience.
Mine is with an individual platinum full merino leather interior and I believe M6 with full leather interior still has the best interior of any BMW currently on sale
The only upgrade you need on getting one is the tyre, replace at least the rear tyre (MPSS) with wide MP4S 305/30/20 and the car is able to make use of all the HP and more composed in the wet

I just bought this, it’s a Competition Pack and very different to the normal M6 I test drove 8 weeks ago. I love it

Yes. Lack of any body roll on such a big car is sublime for M6 Comp. My M6 frozen black attached

Nice colour that frozen black, almost looks very dark grey due to the frozen nature of it. My mate just picked up an M6 cabs in frozen white, any tips for looking after the paint ??

Thought I'd update this .... I juat couldn't get excited about the M4 after plenty of BMWs over the years and in the end I felt the M6 was just too big.

I bought a W205 C63s Estate in the end. So far so good ... it's pretty epic!

Sorry for replying late. From BMW video on frozen colours. It can only be hand washed gently with neutral soap or soap made specifically for frozen colour

M6 all day long for me , have test driven both M6,and M4 , found the M4 very noisy in a bad way , currently own 640d gc and love it , terrific feel good factor ,will feel big and heavy in contrast to boxter though but they can be hustled , M4 is a bit heavy anyway .
Oops just realising you have went C63 !
