Ford Toploader Gearbox

A friend died and I'm selling off his stuff - one of the items is a blue 4 speed toploader gearbox

He seemed to think it was worth thousands and I can see one on ebay for £2200 but I also see new ones for £1500

Was there something special about the older ones ?

Are some more valuable than others / anything I should check ?

For some people perhaps looking to restore an incomplete 60's muscle car (and maybe a European car with USAS powerplant) the £2.2K cost of a used gearbox set against the potential value of the finished article will figure many will be happy to pay for a correct period dated component (whatever it is) that adds additional value to the car. People can go on all they want about the quality of 'new' aftermarket 5 and 6 speed transmissions to replace these earlier gearboxes but most of them seem to have ratio's based on OEM car manufacturers CAFE standards rather than the close ratio gear sets M21's and Toploaders offered 'back in the day'.

Loads of info on the web, so some digging, however as with all things, a gearbox sitting on the floor , with no checkable rebuild paperwork/invoices will be
brought by anyone with half a brain as a gearbox requiring a full rebuild,

If the bellhousing and clutch mechanism is also there it would make it obliviously worth more cash, plus probably easier to sell! ie auto to manual etc!

There's loads of talk, but not much info on prices.

Anyone selling says they are worth £2k anyone buying says it'll need a rebuild and worth sub £500

I can find a few sold on Ebay USA, not many in the UK

For comparisons the few Muncie's that have come up for sale over the last few years seem to have been priced between £750 and £1500.

If the box is in good condition they are worth around £2000 so I have been told

Advertise it in Classic Race car circles. Money is no object to those boys lol.

To the untrained eye, most gearboxes look good inside as most only look at the gear teeth & if not broken or chiped think alls ok, but when you install it & it crunches into 2nd, jumps out of 3 if you back off the accelerator etc, that's when you now have possibly a £1000 rebuild in front of you & why £500 for a top loader is a good starting point if you can't guarantee it.
