Yes i know if your worried about the fuel bills then dont buy a V8! But after my first run to work today im seriously considering selling it!

I decided to do my run gently today to try and save fuel.. see how economical she is.... but i averaged 16.6mpg! Thats terrible when im not even gunning it and having fun!! 2.6 gallons she drank over 42miles including bypass driving!

Is that the best i can ever expect? How do you guy get 20mpg?? surely you dont have to go that gently on the revs??

It it possible i drove to slow... looking at my average speed for the day it says 20mph average speed, but ive done 85 on bypass today as well...

Any advixe on how to get the best out of driving the V8 would be well recieved!

Thanks from a pannic new V8 Owner!

Hi MCD,

I've just dragged this from the VT Manual so apologies if it's teaching you to suck eggs.
Recommended Change Speeds

V8 Engines

Gear Change / Max Economy / Normal

1st-2nd / 10mph (15km/h) / 15mph (25km/h)

2nd-3rd / 15mph (25km/h) / 21mph (35km/h)

3rd-4th / 21mph (35km/h) / 29mph (48km/h)

4th-5th / 30mph (50km/h) / 40mph (65km/h)

5th-6th / 43mph (70km/h) / 50mph (80km/h)

"Fuel consumption should not be judged until the engine has been "run in". You should wait at least 1,500km before checking fuel consumption
Hope it's of some use to you.

Picked my new CV8 up on Saturday. Spent Sat and Sun poodling around localling showing off to friends and family....12mpg. Went on a run today, mixture of roads and driving, got 24mpg. As the car has only done 300 miles now, I'll expect that to improve over time.

thanks guys...

Think the way forward is to buy second car for the work run... an oil burner as you say!!

So running in, do you mean take an average after doing 1500? Or wait till that much is on the engine? IF so this cars cover 8500 already so should be run in?

I just can work out how mine just shows 16mpg all the time, hammered it big time tonight with mates in... showed 16mpg, cruised it this evening 16mpg! Wonder if the datas wrong !

Think ill buy a sh1tter for the work runs...

I've got a new VXR. Set the cruise to 70mph because I was in no hurry up the M40 to B-ham, and over about 100 miles got 29.8mpg! The car sits in rush hour traffic on the motorway in the mornings, and gets driven around locally and I still get over 20mpg.

Is the 16mpg the average for thousands of miles or are you resetting the trip computer with each tank?

My Dad's old Ford Scorpio did 16mpg on a good day just pootling round. I'd say the same from a 5.7 is pretty good. My Z06 did 23mpg from Cardiff to Billing, cruising most of the way. Upping the pace a bit on the way back dropped it to 22mpg but these are US gallons soit must be nearer 25mpg.

Resetting it everytrip at them moment.. but i'm leaving it this week now, got it all turned of, not watching, will see how it does!

Its not i mind the mpg, just would have prefered better on my run to work so I could have a play in the evenings etc.... I do 42miles a day, did this on 2.6gallons yesterdat, so about £10.. if its about that each day then it aint too bad i suppose! Especially if when i really hammer it, its still the same!

I just thought with it being remapped etc it would be better than a standard Monaro CV8, but so far doesnt seem much different to factory figures! Perhaps when its got more miles on the clock it will improve!

Just to give you another reference....
I get close to 30MPG on the motorway averaging 80mph and then it drops to about mid 20's if I sit on 95-100. Around town I get low teens & single digits when the fun meter kicks in! Mine has the same engine & 6 speed Tremac as the UK "GTS-R".
