BA are second to none when it comes to aircraft maintenance and have highly trained professional staff, but can be a bit anal 
... then again, what do you expect?.. they are British!
Only ever used Continental of the others and they ran out of Becks after 2 hours
, so everyone had to drink Coors nats piss 
.... but I did manage to get free tickets, flights and meal vouchers when my return journey was screwed up by a Denver blizzard... took a brief and jolly diversion to New Orleans

Forget BA. Honestly. They have a lot to learn when it comes to service unless you are in 1st. I don't believe that you should have to shell out that kind of cash for decent service on a 6.5hr flight though.
If you are flying in economy, take a flight at around 6pm on Tuesday with American Airlines. The seats are almost always empty and you can get a whole row to yourself.
I flew Virgin a few times in 1st, Business ane Economy. They get bit funky with the music prior to takeoff though. I prefer a bit of classical to calm down the nervous passengers. Service was excellent throughout class.

)Virgin or BA would be my choices. American owned airlines treat the UK as an extension of their domestic routes and you get a corresponding level of service, also they are more tight with booze.
Virgin seem to attract more chavs than BA, lot more bucket and spade travellers who do not know 'the drill' when travelling on an aircraft, thus expect 1st class service in economy.

That is true.
Big difference between legroom on BA and AA though. Obviously, if you have short legs it doesn't matter much.
