Ok... well as Elise owners, we're obviously fairly uncompromising blokes and blokettes right? I mean most people can't see the point of a car that costs so much (comparatively) that has so little in terms of spec, because we're all conditioned these days to strive for the most gadgets per pound spent.

When it comes to relationships, I'm fast learning that the Elise can be a point of contention in a relationship.... my gf found this out when I bought mine... I was saving money for the TR7 project then blew all my savings on the Elise... which I think scuppered her plans for getting me to travel overseas with her at sometime in the near future.

I think her sense of humour is wearing thin too... she's used to me making snyde remarkes about her upsetting the handling of the car when she's riding along with me, usually something like "I'll have to trade you in on a lighter model" but the other day when she complained ad having to clamber in and out with the roof on I said that I'd have to not only swap her for a slim girl, but a slim gymnast.... It's all pretty good humoured, but I think in all fairness she'd prefer I wasn't so enamoured with my little Lotus.

I think the only reason she's refrained from using the line "the car goes or I go" line is because she knows she'd be out the door in a flash.

Anyone else have similar tails of relationship stress they can attribute to their Elise?

It must be the name itself then. My wife would quite like a divorce because of my 944, and her name is Elise...

I bought my elise 111s a week after the birth of my second child. Went down like the proverbial lead balloon at home. Comments like "not exactly a family car", "parental responsibility", "need to be a contortionist to get in" etc etc.

Over the past 18 months the comments have become more specifically directed at the car - "rollerskate", "recycled tesco packet". I suspect much of this may be in the quest for an upgraded family car. (Renault megane at present) She has never really related to sports cars or speed for that matter. Still, my 5 yr old son loves the elise but doesn't seem to have worked out what a bad idea it is to come home and praise the virtues of the car in terms of speed: "dad drove really fast" or "we went round the corners really quickly". This has been been followed by lectures on responsibility - you're an A&E consultant - you should know better etc etc.

That said, when she has had to drive the car, she usually has a smile on her face and for the most part has humoured most of my more excentric hobbies.

And in the end, that's all we ask for.... understanding..... I'm in a relationship, but am still very much a single lad.... as in I'm just at a "take it or leave it" stage of my life... I'm doing my thing and ENJOYING life for a change... after 5 hard slog years and sacrifice at university and then another couple of years of sacrifice to pay back the student loan, I'm having some "me" time in life.... and I live in a country where there's less than 50 Elises in total and probably less than 20 S1s... so it's a rare thing indeed.... if I'd not snapped up the chance to buy my one when I did, it may never have come along again..... well that's how I justify it anyway

you need to trade the GF in - my GF actually cancelled our planned month holiday to Aus so I could put the savings towards a Honda conversion

Esprit - the remarks are not too nice though. Women take any comments like that to heart, even if it looks like they don't. If you want to keep her and for her to be happy I'd suggest you cut out the 'large' type comments.

You've been to Oz then or did you give it up to get the Honda engine? Error!!

I put off buying my Lotus for 6 months to get to Oz for 10 weeks.

I dreamed after an Elise for so long and so much that my wife finally gave in and allowed me to get one. 10 years of comparing everything to an Elise did the job. Nice Mr2... not as nice as an elise, Nice 4x4... not as nice as an elise. Nice camera... I would prefer an elise etc etc etc. Do that for ten years and she will give in!

Hehe nah she's cool with it really.. she knows she's not fat and so so I, I tell her that daily... she knows that my ideal girlfriend weighs 4kg and can fit on the floor to keep the CofG low She's just got back from holiday and I think she may have even missed the Elise... maybe times are a-changing :P

My girlfriend hated my Elise. Too cramped, difficult to get into / out of, seats have no padding, noisey, leaks etc, etc.

As a result I now have no girlfriend and a lovely new shiny S2 Exige

My gf hated my FTO until I said I was goingto swap it for an Elise, now it's a nice car that she wants me to keep.

May have to go the way of the Dave - sell up and split the house, find another one nearer work with a garage and cheaper train fare, and get a new Exige too

My ex 'liked' the Elise but I never got the sense that she shared the passion I have. Never wanted to drive it even to try and understand - I think she was scared actually.

Over the last week though I've gone from being single-man no way I'm getting involved to pretty damn happy to have met someone. Without going into too much detail she is not only (IMvHO) utterly beautiful, very intelligent, and a wonderful person, but also loves Lotus, desperately wants an Elise and has her handbag and shoes at the ready at the faintest hint of a roof-off blast.

Yesterday we spent nearly all afternoon hacking it across the Kent countryside with the roof off and she was egging me on to give it more beans at every opportunity.

So basically, buying this one could well be the best move I ever made!

Congrats S works. Looks as thoug life is looking up. El beast 2 and now this! Good going. Don't think my wife will ever have the car / elise / speed passion but in reality I can't really complain though - she didn't divorce me when I bought the elise.

Go well with the new monster (E.B.2)
