Ipod with fm transmitter ???

Just returned from magaluf where I saw a kid sending tunes from an Ipod to a portable stereo. I’ve since learned this can also be done in the car.

Buy an Ipod and Fm transmitter (illegal)? Fill it with music. Tune the Ipod to an unoccupied radio frequency. Tune your radio to the same frequency and apparently you can play the music from the Ipod through your car stereo.

Sounds like a better idea then a CD milti changer in the boot.

Before I run off to buy an Ipod. Is anyone doing this and is it as straightforward as it apears?

Called the i-trip I think. Why not buy a ipod interface for the headunit? Alpine,Kenwood & Pioneer do them now, I use the Alpine one and can control the ipod from the headunit(also charges and displays the text on screen). Cost about £70 for the interface box.

I thought could also use the transmitter for house parties. Tune all the radios in the house to the same frequency then feed them from the Ipod? Same music throughout the house, garden etc.??

Haven't tried it myself but I think that in the car it doesn't transmit the signal very well in built up areas due to interference. What headunit have you got?,

quite a few guys on SELOC have Ipods + transmitters or Ipod + interface kit for the stereo...you could just get an MP3 head unit for £200 and then you can get 12 albums or so on 1 cd - Ive had one for 3 years now and it does me - I just change the CD every couple of weeks.......of course if you already have an Ipod, then just get a cable, bracket, and charger maybe an away you go

Another option is to get one of the newish Nakamichi head units.
These clever people have somehow crammed a 6CD mutli changer actually into the head unit.
It aint cheap, but not that expensive for the entry level model.
Its another option, rather than the ipod/i-trip option. And yes the i-rip is illegal in this country, beleive it or not it comes under the same laws as Pirate Radio. The setup has to be spot on too, or the clarity of sound is similar to an AM station.

Hello...

I have a S2 with factory fitted clarion - i just last week had an auxiliary input fitted to it which allows and iPod/Pda to be connected... Sound quality is brilliant. Works much better than itrip as there's too much interference with that.

It works by by-passing the ariel at a flick of a switch...

I was going to buy a new stereo with built in auxiliary in, but this was the cheaper option @ 104 inc vat fitted.

I wouldnt bother with the Nakamichi - they are like £600-1000, Ive had 2 of them..the first ones came out about 7 years ago with the 6 CDs inside. Both of mine went wrong and had to be repaired - they dont stand up to well to be banged around in an Elise

I've been using an iTrip for a while. After the euphoria of having access to 7,000 tunes in my car died down, I quickly realised that the sound quality is just not consistent enough for irritation free music enjoyment.

I've just had a Dension Ice-Link installed in my S2 Exige. It allows you to control the iPod from the head unit - it mimics a CD changer - and gives good sound quality. It's not as cheap as the iTrip, being c.£100 plus fitting. However, I would definitely recommend it.

I know the Nakamichi's have had issues, but I have been informed that the CD transport and storage setup have been modified recently
Mot sure how try this is, as the person telling me this was trying to sell me one at the time, but it may be worth bearing in mind

As well as the Dension Icelink, the other option to consider is the Dension headunit with built in hard drive. I picked mine up off ebay for under £200 and saves having to remember to take your ipod with you.

I have a Kenwood head unit which I bought with the car 5 years ago. Went to the local Car HiFi ice place and bought a cable that plugs into the Autochanger socket that gives Phono input, got a phono to jackplug conv and can now plug any device into the stereo via a jackplug. I use a CD player that plays MP3s.

Thanks for your ideas.

I’ve found a friend with an Ipod and transmitter. I’ll borrow his for a while and let you know how I get on.

I'm also looking at options, I already have an Ipod, but no stereo in my car.... Was considering one of the Alpine/Kenwood boxes with one of their headsets, but recently read a hands on review from someone with an Alpine unit who wasn't that impressed. Not sure if that was an older unit, but interested to know how people have been getting on with the Ipod-Headunit interfaces?

i was planning on fitting an autochanger, surely you can route the cable around the engine and put it in the boot?

otherwise i'll probalby get an mp3 player and a cable to connect it to the head unit. but i'm surprised that you can't fit the autochanger.

Don't waste hundreds of pounds on plumbed in head-unit to iPod interfaces. They are very nice and tech but you really don't need to bother.

The iTrip is overrated. What you want is a PodGear CarDock
