Have just got my car back from a dealer service in Surrey. Standard A-service, no extras, £418. Seems more than a bit on the steep side. Can't wait for a B or C service - might have to sell my house!

Furthermore, there seems to be a sort of rattle from the gearbox when I lift off the gas while in gear, similar to when I had a low level of gearbox oil after a leaky seal last year. Will need to take it somewhere next week to have the gearbox oil level checked - not really what I was hoping for after such an expensive service.

Any advice re good specialists within 30 or so miles of Reading? Anyone got any experience of Plans motorsport south of Guilford? Would greatly appreciate any input.

Hi there - you could try Steve at Thames Valley Racing (0118 970 6767):

www.tvrbliss.co.uk/thames-valley-racing/

He's well know in TVR circles and is responsible for running some of the Tuscan Race Cars. Last time I spoke to him he was also servicing Lotuses as well.

You may have seen the Fifth Gear where they bought the Lotus Esprit as a project (which Tiff Needell managed to knacker twice) - they used Steve to carry out the work on the car.

You could also try Bell & Colvill - they charge £325 for an A service and £395 for a B service.

At £418 and 'no extras' for a mere 'A' service you have been royally ripped-off to a degree I have hitherto unseen!!

Next time research PH/SELOC and pay the going rate!

£418 !!!!!!

I used to charge £100 for an A service with fully synth oil and probably more attention to detail.

I have also just had my Porker 996 serviced for about half that.

Feck me, what a rip off.
