Good day Gareth,

I'm sure you get this sort of questions often, since you own officially the quickest car on the roads. I'm very recently exposed to Ultimas, and now am very very taken with them. Trying to find out the most I can about them before I arrive in the UK.

1. What's your comment on how your car drives on normal roads? Do you drive it daily?

2. Except for the alternator, how has the reliability been?

3. Does your car have a sequential or a normal H-type trans?

4. What's your opinion on the new AS top spec engines?
The 406cid makes 720hp and the same torque as your engine but at a very slightly lower rpm.
Have you heard anybody building a gtr with this engine? It would probably make an interesting record attempt for the factory.

5. Talking about record runs, any plans for another attempt by the factory with your car? It seems Ted and Richard feels there's room for improvement with a lower 0-100.

MAny thanks in advance. I must say you're living a lot of our sweetest dreams, having the quickest car on the road in your garage.

The car is very good on normal road, it dislikes driving under 2000 rpm, between 2000-5000 is quicker than anything else after 5000-76000 you let loose hell

It is very good, no other sports car takes the abuse that it has and keeps going ...

I have a G50 gearbox like everyone else but I match the engine to the gearbox, if you go big cubes and turbos you will stress a G50, get your power through rpm the torque curve happens higher the gearbox survives

The 720 bhp has the 18 degree head with some porting, I stayed away from head porting for reliability.
The 406 cid has a different crank and will not rev as fast as my 377ci ( which is a bored 350ci)
Has anyone got a 720 bhp, I don't know don't think so.

Nothing is planned, but we could go 2-3 tenths better

Someone will build something quicker, I am pleased that my theories on a 377ci were right.

does anyone know how much the factory will charge for an exact replica of Gareth's car?

or for a GTR640/factory demonstrator?

The rather obvious answer----The Factory.

Is that right? My understanding is that gearboxes are torque rated, not rpm rated. ie 600 lbs/ft is 600 lbs/ft, regardless of RPM?

I think what he meant was big cubes / turbos drop in allot of torque all at once. Smaller cube higher revving engines have a more liner torque curve which doesn't stress the gear box as much.

S'ppose it makes sense if there is some kind of short period 'shock torque' that exceeds the g'box rating signficantly.. although V8s are pretty smooth delivery even at low revs, so I'm not sure how much of a difference it makes - would be interested to hear of experiences though.

Normally the reason for going toward higher revs is simply more power for a given cubic capacity... and unless you are after higher top speed, then typically the gearbox ratio is changed... to alter those extra RPMs into more, not less torque. Swings and roundabouts?

Don't think they are rated at 600 lbs/ft, Porsche 911 Turbo only now produce 450lbs/ft of torque which is 600Nm
Fortunately the Germans allow large tolerences so they are very reliable but we are pushing 600+ bhp and 600 lbs/ft torque through it and if you don't have a G50-50 you better think how to do it !!

Will be interesting indeed. All other things being equal, for best standing quarters / or 0-100-0 etc, my money will be on an engine that has big torque at big revs... or put another way, the engine with the highest HP developed *at peak torque revs.*

V. nice motor.. and thats a real cool kinsler setup (v envious)

Related to this particular beasite...

Will those tall stacks fit OK under the clip? (with an air filter)

What revs is max torque developed at?

What oil pump are you using for the dry sump..

Where will the alternator go? (on my setup the alt is where the oil pump is here)

Cheers,

Adam

It'll go on the top of the other side I think. This is actually the OEM location for the alternator for the SBC. We use the position used by the OEM power steering pump for our low mount alternators.
