Tuesday 8th of December marks the 40th anniversary of John Lennon's untimely death.
The Beatles were a bit ahead of my time other than the many singles most of us are now familiar with, and only quite recently have I invested in Sgt Pepper, Abbey Road and "The White Album". Added John's Imagine album recently too.

I'm sure there will be many here whose memories of John, The Beatles and that era may like to share....

Different things to different folk was John
A rebel
A hero
A good song writer (sometimes)
A good rock & roll singer
A bit of a tw*t sometimes

The Beatles would have been nothing without him

To be fair, I don't think The Beatles would have been anything without any of them. A unique foursome who all brought something different to the party - even Ringo.

Remember the day the news broke even now. I was tying my shoelaces ready to go to school when the announcement came over the radio. My mother came down the stairs into the living room and I said "John Lennon has been shot - who was he?" I remember her gasping with shock, and saying "Oh God, no..."

It was a little while later that I first played her two double albums (the red and blue ones), and thinking "Oh, I remember this song... and this one... and this one... and...."

A very under-rated rhythm guitarist, I think - and with McCartney probably the greatest song-writing team ever.

I remember walking into our local newsagent first thing, seeing the piles of papers with the awful headlines and grainy b&w photos, so shocking at the time. I had a bit of a Beatles mop top at the time and going into school that day a lad in my class said “yer mate’s dead”.

There was a pivotal moment in John’s life which could so easily have changed the course of history - his errant father who worked on cruise ships wanted to take him away from Liverpool when he was just five years old, his aunt Mimi asked him whether he wanted to go away or stay with her, he broke into tears on the dock side and chose Mimi. Meeting Macca later on was no doubt just as pivotal, the bond they formed together was in part due to the fact that they had both lost their mothers at a young age, in John’s case his mother Julia was knocked down and killed by a drunken off duty copper, which must have affected him deeply.

How to make you feel old in one easy lesson.

I saw a programme on BBC News at the weekend. I was staying with my Mum for a couple of days and she said "Oh, has one of them died" - I replied "Yes, John Lennon, but it was 40 years ago".

I think a lot of people disregard The Beatles these days, but most are unaware of the impact they had on modern music, even to today.

A lot of their stuff was groundbreaking at the time - They may not have been the ONLY people doing it, but their reach and popularity certainly meant it got heard (and accepted) by a huge number of people.

A lot of their songs, too, were absolute classics and will probably be hummed in hundreds of years time, the way people hum bars from the William Tell overture or the 4 Seasons today.

For me hearing that he had died, is one of those, " I remember where I was moments", oddly though, it was because when I had heard he had died, I had no idea who he was.
I was 13 at the time, and was in a friends kitchen, waiting for a lift to school from his dad.
It seems bizarre now that I had not heard of him, but my parents were never ones to listen to music at home, so I had just not come across the Beatles music.

I was 18, and 8/12/80 was 3 days before I was flying to the USA for the first time. I was ridiculously excited about going to the States, coming from a pretty poor background where no one in the family had travelled abroad, and it put a bit of a downer on the preparations. I wasn't a Beatles fan, but Lennon was, even then, a legendary figure in music.

Hadn't realised but it's 43 years today since he was killed.

Can remember that day vividly
