Our second Sky box is failing to make it's monthly callbacks to Sky , which as I am sure most of you know is a prerequisite for getting the discount on the second box.

Presumably it's the modem that has gone down , so ,

Are they repairable ?

What alternatives are there to buying a replacement from Sky ? If you got one from ebay there would be no guarantee that it would work.

Any suggestions ?

Give Sky a call and go through the diagnostics with them, they more often than not work given a few chances and re-sets.

If you're "number withheld" then you also need to put the 1470 prefix in.

I had the same problem, i think its a common failure of these boxes.

They came and fitted a nokia sky box as a replacement.

Be doing that since Feb , ta though. This is the point where I now know we have a problem.

Ah, I see, in that case tell Sky you're need a new box, when thay tell you how much it is, tell them you were thinking about having Sky plus but now you'll cancel due to the cost of the new box.

Worked for 2 people in the same boat that I know and both got upgraded to Sky plus for £49, free installation and no extra subs.

Another advantage of this is that if you book a Box Office you are not charged for it providing you connect up the phone line for the 'Checking Purchase Information' bit and then unplug it.

Of course I'm not advocating deception of BSkyB but a friend of my Auntie's second sister in law says this works a treat

The box stores payment information and will upload and bill you once the phone is connected properly. If the phone line is not connected correctly then the box will fill up it payment information section and refuse to receive any more films

My phone line was out of action for 24 hours recently until I tracked it down to the sky box and disconnected it from the phone. Why do they need to connect to the phone line?

They dont, if you read your contract it is only a requirement for it to be connected for the first year. I assume they think that after a year people will forget and leave it connected. So if you can unplug it after a year there is no reason you need it connectedd at all. The programs are received from your dish.

You only need to be connected to a telephone line if you want to use the interactive functions buy pressing red on your controller or ordering a film from Sky box office

My sky box worked fine until I decided to upgrade to Sky+. The old box is currently sitting in my spare bedroom doing nothing, if you were to throw some beer tokens at me I might be tempted to part with it.

Im in Orpington so not too far from you.If it does not work I would have the box back and full refund, cant say fairer than that.

I unplugged my Sky box an hour after the engineer left the house, 4 years on they've never said anything.

Cable is better/easier - buy a chipped box from an engineer - pay for the minimum package and get all the channels inc pay per view.
Only down side is when they roll the security codes you have to bung the previously mentioned engineer IIRC £10 to rewrite the card or buy a card writer, suss out how to program it and do it yourself

okay. tis late. I've read all the replies. The reason you need tobe connected to the phone is 'cos you are getting a £31 service for a tenner. the "phone back" is to ensure that at random intervals the box , and service , is still at your premises.

Really? My dad got a second box, shipped it to Europe a year ago so he wouldn't have to lug a box back and forth and both are still working.

Also I've never had my box plugged into the phone since I bought it. In fact, for the Sky box office thing, my mate made me a blank BT socket, plugged my sky box in and I've never paid for films.

Ha ha! That'll teach them for sticking all those adverts on every 10 minutes

Each box will have an allowance IIRC its 50 or 100 squid, you will get the first x films free by not connecting, but will get a big bill if you ever do..
