Agree re the taxation...

Chap at work has had a Golf GTE for three years. It’s been plugged in four times....three of those were when someone else borrowed it!

In my case, I went from a diesel car that did 50mpg to opting out and buying a petrol car currently doing 29mpg.

On the positive side, the turbocharged triple sounds quite nice when pressing on and it handles really nicely - you can feel the back end dig in when you put your foot down.

I'm still wondering how BMW made 19" wheels look so small, though.

It’s a shame really because plug ins make a lot of sense for people who pay for their own fuel, have somewhere to charge it, and do trips inside the EV range. I’d be interested to know what ratio of people have them to use the EV compared to people in your position who never use it and just wanted to save the tax. It’s a bit of a travesty really that this goes on, but you can’t blame people for doing it.

How do these work, do they charge the EV side when braking etc. like a Prius etc. so you’ll get some time on electric? And /or does the electric kick in at the same time as the petrol so you get extra performance like the new Land Rovers?

All of the above, on some you can also select a "save" mode that will focus on re-generating the battery, at the expense of fuel consumption.

If you claim your business mileage back then there's incentive to "plug in" regularly to optimise combined mpg.
That said, my last 330e used to routinely get 40-42 mpg (enough to break even with government mileage rates) without plugging in, so I rarely bothered - imagine same for many co car drivers.

The tables have turned now through lockdown - being stuck working from home now, charging is perfect for pottering about locally without having to use any petrol!
