Car valuation

I've seen a Volvo V70 SE 2008 2.4D D5 185bhp Geartronic with 133,000 miles for sale at a small dealer's for £3900, but have no idea if the asking price is fair.

The car is in decent nick with a full service history, cambelt change at 109,000 miles, and I think it has a few extras (sunroof, heated seats and the old pop-up satnav). Obvious defects are bubbling alloys around the studs, and a tear in the driver's seat (seats are trimmed in the standard funny nylon-leather material, and these look slightly mottled, so probably need a clean).


Is there any way to find out a typical price for this model of car (eg by entering its registration number)?

I've had a look on AutoTrader, but can't really see anything which matches.

Stick the reg into wbac it will tell you what they would pay for it, then add a bit since it's retail

Sounds about right for a straight car in good condition.

Are you sure it's not leather?
Most came heated leather.

Prices can differ but the lower priced ones are lower for a reason.

Retail is £3350 but looks like the average selling price is around £3700.

WBAC gave me a valuation of £1875 (£2000 below the dealer's asking price).

I had a feeling it might have been priced quite high. I had nothing to go on, but felt that around £2800 (or even less!) would be a little easier to swallow.

I'm not sure if it's worth haggling... (the alternative is just to look for something else)

Think they are getting to that stage when good clean ones will go for a little more than Retail.
Under £4k is, I think, a good price for a big comfortable good looking family car with excellent heated seats, great engine which will do 40+ mpg, decent equipment and the ability to take high miles very well.

Yes, that's the one. So, do you think it's a fair price considering the WBAC valuation? I'd obviously lose a whack if I decided to sell. I'd need to double-check the car, but it didn't seem to have any problems, and it drove nicely.

You have to remember that WBAC aren't offering a valuation per se but how much they will give you for the car. If it doesn't meet the type of car they want (they punt everything through auction) they'll offer less. I'd say if you want the car there's no harm in trying to haggle if you want to pay less.

I've owned 6 Volvos and all have been excellent, even the 2 XC90s :-)
HPI check it, check SH and invoice for belt change, listen for any knocking on the test drive (they are heavy on front suspension), make sure auto is smooth. D5 engine is pretty robust.

Personally it's an ok price. You could try getting a bit off but if not I'd still go for it.
Can't imagine you have a huge choice being up in Aberdeen.

I think if you are valuing it at £2800 and that's what you are willing to pay then leave it and look at other options because you are looking at 25% under what the dealer is asking and I highly doubt the dealer is going to drop to anywhere near that. I don't think you can go on the WBAC valuation as I suspect they don't really want it so are making a low offer because they will buy any car

Thanks for that. I don't have any experience in buying cars, so I didn't have a clue as to whether or not it was a fair price. The £2800 I mentioned wasn't based on anything other than a feeling about its age and mileage etc. I'm still quite keen on the car, and you've reassured me that it's not outrageously over-priced, so I'll probably go back and see if we can agree a deal.
