£6-7k fast(ish) estate

So I’ve been looking for a replacement for my E39 for what seems like ages. And I’ve been pretty set on getting an E61.

Majority seem to be diesels. Only seen one 530i pop up within my budget and meeting what I wanted from the car.

Now I’m in a conundrum. Part of me still wants the E61, but sacrifice the want for a petrol and just get a 530d.

But over the weekend I’ve been looking at other marques.

Seen this nice looking V50 T5. Not sure if it would be too small?

Also been looking at the Audi A4 Avant B8 guise. 2.0t with the 208bhp and also a Mondeo Titanium X Sport.

My requirements from the car
Fastish (200bhp+)
Road Tax under £300 if possible.
Petrol, ideally.
Decent sized boot for taking small kids bikes with stablisers and all the other gubbins for excursions with kids(and the kitchen sink).
Some mod cons - Heated seats, xenons. Sat nav would be a bonus (or a screen which can be replaced with a CarPlay head unit).

I'd say go for the Mondeo Titanium X/Titanium X Sport it's not only a good car but a good steer too.

I really like that second Mondeo. One of the ones I’ve been looking at. The facelift version look so much better.

Partner had a mk3 Mondeo titanium x diesel. Reliable motor, only downside were the steering for me and the seats. Felt like there was a small lump shoulder level in the seats.

How are the A4’s? Always liked them in s line. Read that they’re quite thirsty for oil and can be a pain mechanically. Would like to be wrong. A Quattro could be fun for the snow (when we have it) where I live. A friend has offered me a chance to drive his a4 saloon diesel.

I want to say, an old man who’s fond of werther’s originals.

Just been browsing autotrader and don’t know why but I like the S-Max in X Sport. Heard they’re a good steer for an MPV. Know it’s not an estate. (Small Part of me is questioning as to wether I want an estate, but there’s just something deep down in me saying get a wagon. Always wanted one, and always said my next car should be a wagon.)

I've had my e61 over 5 years. Good solid cars if you ask me. Just about the right size too. I will accept the tax thing is important as I too refuse to pay the higher rate tax. Took me a long time to find mine. Very rare car with v8 and probably rarest of all with lower pre march 2006 tax band and the newer 4.8 engine. But the 545 is still a good car. The early cars are getting on a bit now. Mine will be 16 soon. I've seen these selling for less than 4k last year but now everything looks more expensive. I consider my car to be only worth 3k and therefore no point selling. Especially because there isn't much I'd want to replace with unless I started paying higher rate tax for something like an e63 estate. Or I break my no SUV rule and buy the original x5 in 4.8is guise.

I am a BMW fan boy. Grew up in them. And 80% of the cars I’ve owned have been a BMW.

I’ve noticed prices across all used cars rise. But yeah, historically seen the big engine petrols going for decent amounts. But now they’ve gone up in price. I do like the X5, but I’m not an SUV guy really. I couldn’t afford to run a big petrol at this moment in time. Such a shame.

Have seen an F11 within budget. It’s a 525d with the 2 litre engine. 145k on clock. Tempted as it’s newer motor too.

The F11 528i I listed is more suited to your requirements.

The TXS has better more supportive seats than the TX, so maybe try one for size.

You’re right it probably is, but I just prefer the BMW when they have the M Sport. I’m picky (or snobby haha) like that.

Weird you should say that... I'm getting rid of my V50 after many years of use and many faults!

I was looking at 330i Estates, VRS estates, Mondeo Titanium X estates etc.. We have a big hound so estate is a minimum really and I didn't want an SUV.

SHMBO said "I like the S Max"... I'm mid thirties with no kids, why would we want a 7 seater?

Anyway, she finds a low mileage S Max Titanium X 240 about 40 miles away so off we go for a look, already made my mind up I want a VRS by now but keep her happy.

This was about 3 weeks ago and I'm writing this post whilst sat in a car park behind the wheel of our 7 seater Van as I call it. It's brilliant!

Acres of space, can fit almost anything in it, looks great, surprisingly brisk for the size of it, 240bhp seems to pull it along rather nicely. Best thing though, by far, only thing that gives it away as having abit of go is the twin exhausts out back, it has surprised numerous people now in the traffic light grand prix and one particular annoying twunt in a Citreon Berlingo who decided to drive two inch off my bumper in a 30 before being turned into a speck in my mirror as soon as getting to an NSL. I'll never get bored of that!

Handles very well for its size, is whisper quiet when just pottering about, seats are comfortable and give a vast range of different driving positions, visability is superb. I'd look for one with the touchscreen console, makes interior look alot more modern.

Downside so far is ignore the claimed MPG, we've averaged about 24 now though mostly town to be fair.

Go view one and take it for a spin, will be pleasantly surprised.
