Is the 2.2l CDTi engine also known as a DTEC, or are they two different engines?

Is there anything to watch out for on the CDTi - eg timing belt changes? I'm tempted to have a look at a car with around 160,000 miles on the clock, so wondering about general reliability. Are there any common issues, such as EGR valves, DPF filters, gearboxes, clutches etc?

As for the 2007 Civics in general - do they hold up well, or is rot common?

Have a 58 plate on 120k. Not the most refined engine but pokey and frugal. Been ultra reliable, apparently the clutch is a weak point on them so check for slippage.

Sometimes the clock LCD on ours gors a bit weird but a quick tap sorts it, apparently the solder melts over time. Look for rust at top of windscreen where the roof begins, that can be a thing apparently. Oh, and paint is super thin so expect stone chips.

They are very well put together cars and extremely practical. Intend to run ours into the ground.

My mate had one and loved it, I'm sure he kept it until high miles.

I remember his clutch was slipping a bit but it wasn't too bad so he never fixed it. New clutch and dmf is fairly expensive. Also there was some kind of issue with the exhaust manifold which was quite serious. I can't recall exactly what it was but you might find it with Google as it was a common fault which Honda covered up to about 120k miles. His had more than that. I'd check that fix had been done.

Other than that it's a good car. Timing chain so no belt and also no DPF.

A 2007 would be the iCDTi ( no DPF) rather than the iDTEC. The original chocolate ‘305’ would have been changed by now on a 160kmiles car with the newer ‘325’ ones than replaced it. Clutches are made by Lux. If it’s not slipping now it should be fine.
Rust where the windscreen meets the roof in non panaramic roof cars seem to be the only rust spot and easily to identify. Not a major issue usually other than cosmetics. The EGR valve is right in front of you and a diy remove and clean if needed. Honda sell new gaskets.
As with all cars with this mileage you want to see how the suspension components are holding up and if the dampers are leaking.
Engines, gearboxes and general reliability is typical Honda.

I had a quick search on civinfo. The exhaust manifold can crack which means the cabin will smell of diesel for the first few mins of driving. Something to check on test drive.

I had the petrol 1.8, it got 40mpg average and 50s on a run.

The diesels are known for bad clutches as mentioned above.

Things that went wrong with mine in 6 months:
-Speed sensor (Speedo went mental)
-Boot spoiler where it meets the glass leaked like crazy

Thanks very much.

It sounds quite promising. From the photos it looks like this particular one might have a panoramic roof (it's an EX).

I suppose my main concern is rust.

It's MOT history is clean - no advisories, but the current one expires at the end of January.

I'll try to arrange to go and see it. However, I've noticed that it's SORN, so it won't be possible to drive it.

It's advertised for £2400 - does that seem high for one with 160,000 miles, or is it okay if the car is in good condition?

Price that’s about 1k over what equivalent cars are on auto trader at the moment

I have a Type S Diesel. Had it for 7 years, well put together, reliable and economical.
I’d recommend them as a commuter car/general work horse.
Rust above the windscreen happens on them all, radio is cr@p in bad cold weather as I believe Ariel is in the read windscreen.
Space is amazing, big boot great for top runs
It’s a really really good car

I paid just under £7k 7 years ago and taken it from 69k to 146k so far, I think it’s 13 years now and it has been looked after the first 5 years but getting a bit old now and so last 2 years I’ve been ready to change but pandemic has hit that a bit and trying to find something under 6yrs and £7k again is proving hard

Have a look on autotrader I’m sure you’re find a better example with lower mileage for £2.5k. But if not I’d sell mine for less than that I’d only expect under £1k for mine. So not worth selling but £2.5k I would all day haha

I had mine about 4 years ago it was properly mint inside and out, had 59k and I sold it for 4k. So that sounds really expensive for one with triple mileage 4 years later.

I'd look for a clean 1.8 instead.

Non EX models should be around or little over 1k private sale for that age mileage.

If you want something that'll soak up the miles for around 2.5k with sensible miles on (because something with 160k will be wanting a suspension refresh as a minimum.

I'd be looking at something like these:

CLK 270 Avantgarde bulletproof drivetrain no rust issues like on the W208, check that the gearbox fluid has been(should be done every 40k) changed if not then budget £240-300 to get this done.

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2004-Mercedes-Benz-CLK-...

CLK220 Avantgarde as above but with the four pot & 7 speed box

C270

C220cdi Sport Edition

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Mercedes-Benz-C-Class-S...

Elegance SE

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2004-54-MERCEDES-BENZ-C...

C320cdi Avantgarde

https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202011035...

C Coupe 220 SE

https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202011035...

https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202011055...

https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202007091...

All the above will soak up miles with ease & be sensible to maintain, personally I'd look for a 270 as they're a bit sweeter NVH wise than the four pot plus they're as good on fuel with a little more go.

Thanks very much!

I did think it seemed quite expensive, but it looked like slightly tatty ones were £1250, up to £1500. I'd have to see the car, but if it had a good service history and wasn't rusty I'd pay more. As I say, its MOT history is extremely clean - no advisories this year, and the last advisories were over 4 years ago for handbrake adjustment and then an older one for a number plate light. In any case, I haven't been able to contact the seller, so perhaps it's no longer available.

Thanks, ZX10R NIN. It's funny, but I'd spotted a clean-looking C Class 220 yesterday, but it had sold before I'd phoned about it. I'll look at your other suggestions. I was thinking that perhaps the Mercs weren't as reliable as Hondas, and the older Mercs might have paint/rust issues.

At least I'm coming round to the idea of something larger than the Mk1 Aygo I was initially looking for, considering the mileage and type of driving I'd be doing.

What mileage are you doing? Aygo’s are dirt cheap to run but I admit I wouldn’t want to do a lot of miles or go on the motorway in one. My mrs uses hers on the motorway but she only does about 125 miles a week and is happy with it.
If you are after a cheap diesel I think I’d go for a mondeo or something.

Not a diesel but we bought petrol 1.8 with 72k for 3200 and sold it early 2019 at 110k for 1900. Everything worked etc for a few pixels round the clock and the clutch probably would have needed doing but I was honest with the buyer about it and I've seen it driving about since.

Very practical cars, especially around the rear seat and boot etc.

The last long journey I did in it I was getting 52mpg on the m25 according to the OBC. Albeit this translates to about 20% less in real life.

I only sold it as my FiL gave us his 2008 Civic with a higher spec and nearly half the miles.

Sound system and Bluetooth is awful but this can be partially rectified with after market speakers not that I'll bother now. Brilliant spec with panoramic rood, heated seats, dual zone heating, cruise control, xenons.

Being serviced next week and I'll ask then to look at the gear change as 1st and 2nd are sticky plus recharge the A/C. Maybe spark plugs as there is a bit of a jerk/flat spot at low revs.

Everything listed shouldn't have any rust (the CLK's may have some light surface rust at the front of the rear arch due to them getting hit by little stones picked up by the rear tyres) issues.

As I said all the above are reliable & will see you good for another 100k

Thanks!

Yes, the C220 CDi looks really nice. The one I was interested might even have been in better condition and with FSH, but it was an older pre-facelift model.

I'd probably end up doing about 20,000 miles a year in a car - mainly A and B roads, with some trips down to the motorways of Glasgow and England. My Defender is my main vehicle again, but I can see me doing fewer miles in it if I got a decent car.

I've been using a Mk1 Yaris for the past wee while, but its underside is beyond economical repair. It was a really comfy car which handled long distances well, but I was always aware of its age and potential issues, and drove accordingly. It was also fairly noisy, and not the most stable of cars.
