Think carefully about why you want the business to grow and how big you want it to get.

This is a woman giving advice to another woman who has run a family business for several years but wants to expand. Obviously stuck by the glass ceiling that many businesses get stuck with, mine included for that matter.
One bit of advice from the Woman From The BBC is - why do you want grow the business? and how big do you want it to get?
Wtf??
I mean - lets face it. I enjoy eeking out an existance running my business, and I never wish that I could have a salary that actually rewards me for my effort - and as for expanding - what a silly concept? if i had trouble expanding i wouldn't be asking for advice in the first place about how to expand........

In my experience a SWOT analysis is a complete and utter waste of time. It sounds sensible and prudent, but it never actually helps - half the time they're just designed to keep consultants in a job, that's all.
The questions the (so called) "expert" should ask are:
How much do you want to earn?
How much do you want to work?
Do you want your family to inherit the business, or do you plany to sell itone day?
Do you enjoy the work?
When you've got answers to the above questions, you can then put a business plan together. None of this "how big do you want to grow", cobblers.
