With corona virus I don't want to stay in hotels. I would like to start camping.

I've decided I want an estate, which ones are big enough for 2 people. Ideally I'd want awd or 4x4.

I've slept 2 in the boot of the Civic, Both ~6ft in reasonable comfort; I'm sure you would be fine in a full size estate.

The biggest problem you'll have is condensation - I'd suggest giving some consideration to ventilation (At minimum wind deflectors and opened windows).

Bjorn Nyland of Tesla youtube fame has camped in his Teslas and has some nice insulation tricks for Norway, which would help keep you cosy in the UK winter.

What about the Japanese mpv with a pop up roof conversions I keep seeing every so often? Might be a little nicer than the back of an estate.

To be fair, I've done a couple of post covid business trips - what used to be a pleasure - nice food, good beer, decent pools, has turned into some kind of prison camp with polite warders.

I won't do it now. I'd prefer an extra few hours on the road and my own home to a hotel.

Me and my mate slept in a Fiat cinquecento for a week, so I’m going to say more or less any 4 seater car on the market now will do you fine.

I don’t think the breakfast service will be as good as a hotel though (post lock down).

Volvo XC70 AWD

I’d imagine it could get bloody cold and the windows will take forever to clear?

Discovery TD-5. I took the rear seats out for a trip to France, in Feb. TD-5 load area is longer than the 300TDi Discovery. Plus the rear, has plenty of head room. £2,800 buys a half decent one.
I spent one night in the Cevenne and omg, was it cold. Barely slept, but the worst thing, was the freezing cold air, that I was breathing in, it hurt my throat, really unpleasant, the coldest air that I’ve breathed before. There was ice on the inside of the windows in the morning !
When I got back, to Blighty, I bought a set of tailor made interior window blinds. I also plan to get an interior diesel heater fitted as well.

Why not a cheap 4WD SUV? Take out all the seats bar the front two, build a simple plywood platform and install the mattress.

They're often wider, nearly always higher and with way more overall internal space.

You don't need just width for your bed but storage areas for water containers, mini stove, food, clothes and myriad other handy stuff.

An estate might be fine for a one night concert but if you're holidaying then go bigger.

Only ever slept in any car due to desperation like not getting to a camp site in daylight.
Wouldn’t do it out of choice. If I can’t use hotels , I’d rather stay at home.

I regularly sleep in the back of my Mercedes R320. It's a lovely place to camp out, and easily accommodates a couple.

I can confirm the boot of an L322 Range Rover is large enough for two adults and one medium sized dog to spend the night as long as you fold the rear seats flat.

We were camping in Cornwall during the storms of 2004 when Boscastle, just up the road, had their floods. We weren't convinced the tent was going to last the night so abandoned it and took the air-bed and sleeping bags into the boot of the car and dumped our bags across the front seats.

It was certainly a drier and quieter night in there, and much less breezy. The dog loved it.
Thankfully, the tent was still standing in the morning, must have had super pegs.

Not sure I'd choose that option regularly though.

Would a medium van not be better, part converted to accommodate you?

Couple of lads at work travel the country and use various vans converted, they have heat, can hook up to power or, depending where they park, have a small genny powering a low wattage heater to keep the van warm.

I think your right especially as we're supposed to be chilling indoors unless necessary.
