Car movement planning dilemma

All someone at the office is having a bit of a problem juggling cars around.

Car A is at the office
Car B is at the office
Car C is at the dealer

Car A needs to go to the hire car company (at the airport)
Car B needs to go home
Car C needs to go home

The driver is at the office

Office to airport 30 miles
Office to home 15 miles
Airport to home 15 miles
Airport to dealer 5 miles
Dealer to home 20 miles
Dealer to office 30 miles

There are train services between all destinations

How would you get all the cars to the required locations with the minimum number of journeys?

No honestly. It’s a real situation the project manager has at work.

Car A is a hire car he had whilst he was waiting for his new car
Car B is his wife’s car that broke down and he picked up and drove back to the office, hence the reason the hire car is still at the office
Car C is his new car which he has to pick up, hence the need to take car A back to the hire car co.

We have five consultants in the office and we’ve been brain storming this all afternoon trying to “optimise” the number of journeys

Wouldn’t their time have been better spent driving the poxi cars back to where they should be. Typical consultants mind a total waste of space….

Get hire company to pick up their own car.
Drive wife's car home tonight, then drive with her in it to dealer's tomorrow morning, she drives home in it, he drives new car to office.

Sorted.

Drive the hire car back to the airport, taxi to the dealer and pick up new car. Go for a blat, then go to the pub and get so blotto he can't hear the wife complaining about her car being at his work.

This afternoon:
Drive car A from office to airport and drop off
Get train from airport to dealer
Drive car C from dealer to home

Tomorrow morning:
Get train from home to office

Tomorrow afternoon:
Drive car B from office to home

I would

Phone the dealer and ask very nicely if they can drop the hire car off at the airport for him!

Then take new car out for a spin with the wife tonight slid past the office and kick her out so she has to drive hers back

and in the morning he can turn up on time in his new car and stinking of pee because he sat on the damp seat of the train!!




I will just take half what you would of paid your 5 consultants......did any of them get a flip chart involed
