You can leave home where it's "reasonably necessary" or for any of the specified exceptions. Buying a car isn't listed (car dealership showrooms are required to close too), so it would be down to the police (and ultimately a court) to decide whether it was. I suspect that if your current car was fked and you needed a new one to travel to work then it may be deemed necessary. If you were traveling to buy a weekend fun car you saw on Auto Trader, perhaps not.

Interesting question. I got an email from Perry's today saying they are still open - New restrictions in place for both sales and service.. Didn't check these out, but was surprised they are trading in lockdown..

Some, Bristol Street Motors for example, are doing click and collect.

Had an email today from Autotrader to say they have extended my advert for 4 weeks due to new lockdown restrictions.

Similar to one of the posts above, based on the current restrictions for the next month and unless you really, really need the car, should you be travelling to buy one? - probably not.

On the other side of things unless you, or i presume whoever might drive you down to collect the car, go out of your way to really attract the attention of the Police, or maybe enter an area that was being more heavily Policed before the current lockdown, are you likely to be noticed? - probably not.

Looks like dealer sales have just gone back to before with it either being delivery to home after payment or click & collect with some form of distanced handover. Service & MOT remains open as cars still need repairs / MOT's.

Given the dealers around my area in North London, most of the sales departments seemed to be closed to the general public, but are open for click and collect. So we may not be able to just turn up, have a browse etc. But if we have ordered a car, we can collect.

Service departments by and large seem to be remaining open.

I am currently on the look out to buy, and from my understanding if the dealer is offering click and collect, then surely the customer has to go to collect the car (clue in the title). It's surely no different to doing a click and collect for groceries.
