~10 year old Honda CR-V petrol automatic
Discussion
We have been around the houses and this is what my friend wants. I have deterred him from, among other horror shows, the Nissan Juke and Qashqai. I suggested a Suzuki Vitara which was well liked but there are no automatics about so this is where we are.
Are there any experts in the house or experiences to share?
Being Honda I am not expecting that they are a horror show
Engines or specs to avoid?
I have noticed that none of the ads state whether the car is FWD or 4WD. Are they all 4WD?
He has up to £10k

Yep we should have some choice with the budget.
The car he's sent me is a '57' plate with 29k miles for a little under £9k. My normal inclination would be to try to find a later car for that kind of money even if the mileage is a little higher. I would expect a car which is 5 years newer and more like 50k miles would probably have a longer life expectancy?
ETA: To answer my own question, I've read that all CR-Vs from 2007-> were 4WD

Finding an auto will be the hard part and I believe the CVT auto they use doesn't exactly feel very modern. We've had 6 Hondas and I find that in general they wear their miles well. We've never had an issue with any of them. For that reason paying a premium for an earlyish ,k3 cry because it has low miles seem like a false economy. Get a later EX (executive) and as long as it's been serviced it'll serve your friend well.
It's not uncommon to see cheap mk2 and early mk3s being sold with well over 200k on them which is testament to their reliability.

We’ve got an early (2007) mk3 CRV Ex with the 2.0 16v petrol auto lump. Despite being a bit gutless, it’s been faultless in 5 years & 50k miles of ownership. The perfect all rounder for ‘round town’ kids taxi services right through to towing the camping trailer to the West Country in the summer.
The 2.0 petrol is the “R20” lump, which is simply a bigger capacity version of the “R18” used in the civic since 2006, and generally bullet proof with regular oil changes. As I say, despite 150bhp, it has very little torque and needs to be pushed hard to give anything resembling acceptable performance, but on the flip side will give 35mpg on a run.
I believe there was a minor facelift/spec uplift in 2010, so I would certainly suggest he goes for a model after this date as they generally look a bit more modern (colour coded bumpers, nicer body colour options, better wheel options and spec etc)
The mk4 replaced the mk3 in late 2012/2013.
Thumbs up from me, but that money should get him a nice late mk3 model, if not a mk4?

My 73yr old mum picked up a 2007 EX 2.0 Petrol Auto about 4 yrs ago. It has proven faultless. She did look at some that were rotten underneath and then went 200 miles to buy hers and paid over the odds. It is though a really well thought out practical car with seemingly quite a following if a little dated (switchgear) inside. It does everything really well.
