I do love a drop of port. Typically it's a Christmas thing for me, I'll pick up a £15 bottle from the supermarket. However a few years ago my gf at the time bought me a bottle of Graham's 40 year Tawny Port. My god it was amazing, so, I've just bought another bottle for my Xmas hibernation period. It's not cheap (£105) but it's a real treat.

Anyone else into port that can recommend something special?

Port and Christmas you say? I just bought one of these (they had an initial special offer release price) ...

I am looking forward to the month of December. They also do a more basic, cardboard boxed version if the price of the above puts you off.

I usually buy a bottle of LBV for christmas time. Porto is one of the places I do want to visit once I am allowed back out of this country.

I love Port but rarely buy it as the bottle will last 2 evenings, at most.

Used to drink gallons of the stuff at military dinner nights.

I'm not really an aficionado though, I've had £7 bottles I quite like and expensive old LBV that I've not thought much of.

M&S have done an owned branded bottle around Christmas time for the last few years that I thought was nice, think it's about £20.

It does, but it could prove troublesome as I traditionally open my advent calendar window, and scoff the contents, before breakfast...

Can I ask, how long does Port keep?

I do love the stuff, but rarely buy it, as would need to drink it in one sitting. (Which wouldn't be too difficult, manage to get through wine at some rate ...).

It will last a while but you are supposed to drink it in one sitting.

I hear what youre saying, but, it just gives you such a warm feeling inside, kinda like heroin I guess?

Plus, I don't really drink at all during the rest of the year, so man maths says it's a bargain. Btw port usuallys lasts up to two weeks once opened I believe but not much chance of it lasting more than a few days over xmas in my house.

Wow, that's pretty special! And the cheap version could have you nicely soaked for nearly all decemeber for just £70.

I can vouch for the 20 year version of the Graham’s - available at a more reasonable £40 or so. https://www.thedrinkshop.com/item/5838/grahams-20-...

Aldi usually have a 40 year port out at Xmas time for around £30. I've tried to buy it before but it's always sold out. I'll try and get in early this year.

Vintage port (pukka stuff wink ) doesn't last once opened
Tawny ports etc. last much longer... I have had bottles in a fridge for several months which have been fine.

The Grahams above is lovely - I tend though to buy their 10yr old and 20yr old depending on supermarket offers...
Aldi do a good 40 year old tawny port - Maynard which is much cheaper and very good
I also like Otima 10 year old which is a) quite cheap and b) often discounted it - ASDA once did it in a rollback at about £7 a bottle so I cleared the shelves!

Unless I mis-remember, Tawny port is aged in the barrel, so it gets sweeter due to evaporation. Vintage port does the first few years in the barrel, but then you bottle-age it, and the result is less intensely fruity than Tawny, more leather / dark chocolate / cigar boxes.
