My Mum has managed to lock both (!) sets of keys to her mk3.5 MX5 in the boot. The car is locked and the roof is up. Is there any way to gain access to the boot?

Can you slide a pokey thing between the drivers side window and the rubber and hit the boot release button? It'll have to be a long pokey thing.

(I take no responsibility for any broken glass this may cause spin)

I don't think that will work as the boot release button will be disabled with the car locked (e.g. so that it could not be pressed if the car was left locked with the roof off).

Let me go check mine and confirm.

Yep, you're right, button is disabled when the car's locked. I've checked the interior door locks too, neither of those work when the car has been locked with the remote.
Sorry, I'm a bit stumped now.

Thanks for checking that.

I've been doing some research and it looks like if we can get in the cabin (which should be possible), then the ignition can be bypassed to allow power to that button to open the boot...

It may be simpler - and less damaging - to get a locksmith to pick the manual release lock for the boot.

It's so simple to lock your keys in the boot of an MX-5, I've done it once but it was on the drive so all I had to do was go into the house for the spare. But, having learned my lesson, I now have a spare key (just the metal bit, no fob & no chip) in a waterproof wallet stuck to the underside of the car with two strong magnets.

All sorted. We were able to get a basic key made up based on the VIN code of the car. That was all that was needed to open the boot to access the two real keys (the basic key would only open the boot and doors but would not start the car).

£30 fix.

Well done, and far better than doing damage trying to get in any other way!

Well done - now I refer you to my post above; put it in a waterproof wallet with two strong magnets and hide it somewhere under the car. smile
