Maserati ghibli diesel

Looking at replacing my current workhorse for something newer.
I currently run a 2008 A4 Avant S line multironic, had it for 4 years now doing around 20k miles a year. I'm torn between replacing with something that will do the job and pushing to boat out and going for something a bit more special.
So, I'm tempted to go for a diesel Ghibli for a daily driver. Yes they will be expensive to run and insurance is higher.
but a lovely place to sit whilst i'm commuting for 3ish hours a day.
Am I nuts?

I actually had a look into the Ghibli as a next car option, although interior is a massive put off for me, it's very bland compare to rivals. And the dashboard reminds me almost of, dare I say it, a mid 00's Rav 4.

What about having a look at a Jaguar XF.

I do like the interiors of the XF, do they still have the stigma of being a little old fart ish?
Never driven one.
What would you consider are the rivals, E class, 5 series ?

They're actually pretty decent but space wise surprisingly they're more 3 series in terms of interior space.
I like them & having supplied a few I like them, I wouldn't say your mad test drive one if you like it then buy one.

I don’t think you’re crazy, I really like my petrol Ghibli. Think the interior is a very comfortable, classy place to be indeed, and love they they aren’t two a penny. Huge boot, comfortable and quick - even the diesel, which I also test drove before I bought my petrol one.

With depreciation very strong on the diesel especially, there’ll be some bargains out there I should think. Not the obvious choice, but sometimes being practical and sensible isn’t the most fun way to live. Go for it!

67Dino, i like the cut of your jib Sir. Have you had any issues with it?
I did think that a German exec would be the obvious choice. Previously had a 320 M Sport D and this is my 3rd Audi.(none of which were new)
Wont go for another Audi, this one has had some serious issues such as the gearbox went bang after leaking all the ATF out which was a £2K bill and some other stuff i wont bore you with. I was beginning to steer towards a C Class and was really impressed with the Alfa Giulia although i haven't driven one.

Wow...that's super cheap and look nice...you will definitely look forward to your 3 hours journey with this...

I had a Maserati (a GT) and they are relatively reliable but expensive to run. But the grin on your face when you walk to it in the morning and park it at work....priceless. Better than BM, Audi, Jag...no question. It oozes style...spoil yourself....go for it.

Hi Muffster - no problems at all. Had it 2 years now and done about 15k miles in it, mostly motorway and really love it. Generally have had either Audis or Porsches for business miles, and just puts more of a smile on my face (and fewer issues actually). Is quite large for parking/narrow lanes, but then gains loads of room inside and lots of presence. Tyres are about £950+vat for a full set so not cheap, but otherwise not been too bad.

Only thing I’d flag is that in 2017 there was an update that included a few interior and exterior tweaks, and I went for new one which looks better IMO. Easily spotted as pre-update models have silver knobs either side of the SatNav screen, post don’t. Also I’ve got the piano black inside which I think looks v classy and better than the rather Matt wood veneer they do, although that’s just a matter of preference.

Definitely worth test driving I’d say.

The Ghibli in the advert posted above is a stunning colour but over budget for me. I'm looking at the early cars and interestingly I've noticed that they seem to have reasonable mileage on them as opposed to the usual suspect repmobiles which have millennium falcon mileage.
The wife runs a Cayenne and I have an AMV8V for the weekends so I already have the potential for big bills.
(don't ask!) hence my concern about buying into Maserati, but as Paddy has mentioned....that grin!!??

I convinced myself the petrol Ghibli was going to be my next car. I have never driven one but everything seems to be underwhelming except for the engine and exclusivity. The diesel loses one of those plus points I guess too.

The trouble with this kind of highly opinionated video (“why this expensive car is a waste of money!”) is that they aren’t really car reviews, but instead made to appeal to people who weren’t going to get one anyway, but feel better knowing they wouldn’t want one even if they could.

Similarly, it may or may not be true that Buckingham Palace is drafty, spaceflight is tedious, and Margot Robbie snores like thunder, but it certainly helps to believe it. My own experience is that the Ghibli is a truly lovely car to own and drive.

Not too bad, as only needs a service every 2 years/25k miles so only had one so far. I use my local Ferrari/Maserati dealer, and last year’s service was £650 inc vat. Other than that, the only bill was for two tyres (£500), and just about to do the set now (£900), and that’s it. Not bad for 2.5 years ownership of a Maserati.

My petrol one is a bit thirsty on fuel though - I get <30 mpg even on a motorway run. Not sure about the diesel one, would hope it’s better.

That doesn't sound too bad but the diesel is 12months/12500 intervals so a bit of a pain.
Don't think I'd use the MD Maserati/ AM near me. The last time I went in there was for a price for a service & tyres for the V8V. I had a polo shirt jeans and workboots on and they looked at me like I was some sort of urchin. Ha nevermind, needless to say I went elsewhere.

I borrowed a diesel Ghibli for a long weekend. Objectively not as good as my 5 series, but........ it's a Maserati!

Really enjoyed it. Drove nicely, goes well, 35mpg, nice noise for a diesel (I know, it's faked but so what). It was in that blue colour and I couldn't get over the amount of glances and positive comments it got. Father in law "I think the phrase is, WTF" (and he is the most upstanding gentleman you would ever meet). Older neighbours came around to say "you know we are not exactly car fans, but, that is lovely". You don't get that sort of positive reaction from BMWs/Mercs etc. They are incredible value for money no doubt in part to the perceived/actual running costs. You don't need any of us to point that out.

I love the idea of one but have just bought a BMW 640d Gran Coupe instead. Looks special, quick, economical and hopefully cheap to run.

However, imagine the dilemma for you at the weekend - should we take the Aston or the Maserati. Doesn't get better
