motorway wafter, nice place to be.

I've shifted from a 5 series or e class to a cls and now a 640d or s350d.

Nice 2016 s350d 'amg lines' are £25k with a years mercedes warranty, 2016 640d(if I can find one with vdc) seem to be about the same.

say 2-3 years,i'd guess they'd loose 7-9k? as reliable as each other? anything to watch?

This is the s class that floats my boat.

Both are really good engines(had a 640d and currently got that S-Class engine/gearbox in a GLC350d). Neither engine has given me any trouble and I did 70k miles in the 640d, and I've currently done 73k in the GLC.

If I was to choose which one has the best engine/gearbox combination I'd choose the 640d. The 640d is a twin turbo 3 litre diesel whereas the 350d engine is a single turbo 3 litre diesel. The 8 speed auto in the 640d is a little bit better than the 9 speed auto in the merc for me as well.

Both are great cruisers, but Merc do the relaxation thing that bit better than BMW I reckon.

640d MSport Gran Coupe - plenty with 30~35k miles on 17 plates.

Had one for three years, loved it. Surprisingly practical, superb on the motorways and A roads.

Something like this with big spec.... https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202008232...

I think you'll lose more than 7-9k on that diesel S class over the next 2-3 years, especially with the new S class launching in 2021.

If you want to waft it has to be the S-class out of those two, despite the 6-series being a very good car in isolation.

I think you'll lose more than £7-9k on either over 3 years however.

Ideal scenario would be to try and get a back2back test drive or at least drive both cars in the same day to see which works best for you and obviously make sure the test drive route includes a section of motorway (unless you live in Cornwall of course!)

Cheers,

Chris

I have to say the S Class is the most relaxing but it will also lose more out of the two.

I would say test drive a the XJ they're almost as relaxing as the S Class but it's also a good steer if you wanted to up the pace, something like a Portfolio is where I'd be looking.

I've based that on what a 2013 model is at 70k miles being about £15k. So yes, looks like 10k.

I'd go for a 640d but only with VDC.

I did think about them, they just don't do 'it' for me.

have 640d owners had 'adaptive drive'?

looks like it's as good as VDC for the comfort factor?

Mine didn't and the ride was harsh over broken tarmac/pot holes on the 20" wheels. If I had another I'd drop down to the 19" wheels and also look for the VDC as you are doing.

The best riding BMW I've had was my E92 M3 and that had EDC.

I've only been a passenger in various diesel S-classes but driven a 640d.

A 640 is nice car but for me there's no comparison - if you want waft and general refinement, it's the Merc.

I have a 640d GC with VDC.

The ride still isn't fantastic and I would expect the Mercedes to be better. I run the car on non-run-flats as well.

The engine and gearbox are fantastic though - very refined and the auto box is the only one I have ever driven that I would unequivocally recommend. In Sports mode it uses the GPS position to anticipate corners to ensure you're in the optimum gear.

So if you like the occasional back road blast I think the 640d would be better. If wafting and motorway cruising are your priority and back road blasts don't matter the Merc might be the better choice.

That is the same for me with the ZF8 auto in the 640d. A day never goes by where the Mercedes 9 speed auto doesn't trip itself up in one way or another. The 9 speed auto also makes the 350d engine feel quite laggy at times, and you don't get that with the 40d engine in my experience in comparison.

its a bit boring finding one with VDC.

This has.......

https://www.pricelessautos.co.uk/used-bmw-6-series...

Seller seems quite easy to deal with, I asked if he'd have the wheels done in a 'normal' colour, which he was happy to sort.

30,000 miles, recent bmw service and tyres less than 1000 miles ago.

spec is decent.

That does look nice with a lovely spec too for sure. I'd also prefer the wheels in the normal colour as well.

Looking around, it does seem hold money better than a s350d. 60k on it with that spec looks to be worth £16k in 3 years?

The advert says "Adaptive Drive" but I am not sure it really has that - only VDC which is not the same IIRC.

Yes, I know from the spec it’s not adaptive drive but vdc, I think that’s part of the software these sites use that detail spec.

Nice colour for a GT ^^..would also agree on silver wheels being preferable to black.

I'd suggest getting a 4-wheel alignment done if you bought it (or as part of the deal, with proof) as BMW's seem to be particularly alignment sensitive and there was an advisory on a previous MOT for tyre wear on edges.

Cheers,

Chris

What is VDC, how can you tell it has it, and why is it important?
