So, you are walking down the street and a car pulls up, the window winds down and a woman asks for directions to a local place..
You think for a minuite, then raft out a series of directions, she says thanks and off she goes.
Anybody else ever strolled off down the street and thought.. 'actually, it might be the other way' ?

Felt a bit embarrassed.
When I went somewhere, and wanted a pointer,
Its always best to go for fixed direction ie;
shop, then
(if like him above)
directions prove either misleading or downright wrong, theres a sporting chance I might find them again, and discuss this advice next time around.
Asking directions from a pedestrian, is tantamount to disaster, and you deserve all you get

When I'm back home I quite often find people trundling about aimlessly looking for Manchester Airport.
Sorry, but of all the things in the North West, Manchester Airport probably has more potential routes to it, and more roadsigns per square mile, than anything else.
So I just point them in the direction of the nearest signpost

Did similar thing to a couple trying to find their way to the M4. Told em to drive down the road and they would find the blue motorway sign directions. Thought it was the best and most helpful way.

Someone once asked me for Brookwood Lye and I sent them to St Johns Lye by accident, only 5 mins the wrong way tho

Someone once asked me for Brookwood Lye and I sent them to St Johns Lye by accident, only 5 mins the wrong way tho
Only worry is if they noticed you on the way back!

All the time, in fact I never seem to get it right.
A few years ago I had become suspicious of some additions to some gantries on the M1 and was driving round looking for observation spots.
One of the best was a layby on the A453 that runs parallel to the M1 near J24. As I was returning to the car, mind elsewhere, a young business lady pulled up and asked where the nearest petrol stations was.
I asked her which way she was heading. She said south but here fuel guage was only showing about 1/4 full so she didn't think she could be sure to get to Leicester Forest East. (About 18 miles!)
So I thought about it and suggested that East Midlands Airport Service Station was probably the nearest - about 2 miles and not too far off route. I described where it was. Dwon the the roundabout, turn right. Follow the road for a mile or so. Right at some traffic lights and you should see it just over the next roundabout.
She thanked me and drove off, slightly disappointed at the off route detour. (Well, get yourself organised before thinking of joining the motorway I thought!)
As I followed her route, back onto the dual carriageway in fornt of a truck
I spotted the next road sign.
Left-ish to the M1 and A42, right to the airport and Ashby de-la Zouch. And straight over for the J23a services that had been built about 3 years previously ...!
From where she was parked she must have been able to see the sign (I was facing the other way while talking to her) which was about 200 meters up the road.
The things is, living locally, I had never visited the services. So it didn't even register as an option when this stranger suddenly stopped and asked me, simply because I was walking I guess, where the nearest fuel was to be found. Perhaps if I had been a stranger to the area she would have got a better answer.
Mostly I am lucky and people only stop and ask when I am somewhere I don't know. Gives me the opportunity to respond with "No idea I'm afraid - I was hoping you would be able to help me...."
