Snake ID?

SW France, my dog found this. It's maybe 1 or 2 cm in diameter round the body, and perhaps 40 or 50cm long. I think It's a Whip Snake.

Does it pose a threat to the dog?

I don’t know what they’re called but we get those in our garden in the Dordogne. Usual pattern of play is dog barks at them, they slither off

Certainly Grass snakes that look like this one aren't very common at all.

I hoped that was the case. The trouble is, this one won't bugger off, so the dog's currently banned from the garden.

When they start loitering or get a bit too big for my liking, the ones in our garden have a short, sharp meeting with Mr 12 bore

This one's really quite small. He'd easily fit between the pieces of shot . First time in fifteen years I've seen one in our garden.

Certainly looks like what they describe as a juvenile western whip snake. Say's they're not venomous.

Firstly, don’t get your knickers in a twist. Secondly, apologies as I’ve just read your message again and seen your location; so yes, it’s not a grass snake. Thirdly, if you’d carried out a ten-second Google search you would have found that the whip snake is indeed your answer.

I did. Which is why I said I believed it to be a whip snake in my opening post.
