More temperature headaches..!

Help! I'm in need if a little expert knowledge...
Not so long ago I posted a few questions as I was experiencing some weird things with the running temp. If stationary or moving in slow traffic (less than 2000revs) the temp would very rapidly rise to the red.
What I can't understand is that once the needle has risen I can make it drop equally fast by revving the engine to about 2500/3000 for a few seconds. I took this for air cooling previously because i was accelerating, but I can do this stationary with the same effect???
The fan is working and the coolant is okay. It could be the guage, but that seems okay when moving along and there is too much of a routine to it. The engine definately is too hot as the coolant has overflowed slightly before at this point. The car was absolutely fine on a recent 700 mile trip as long as i didn't crawl along at 10 mph for more than a few minutes, not too easy while living in london though! :mad:
Any ideas what I should be looking at next?

Any idea how old the water pump is? If it is getting on a bit the rotor could be rotting away and not working efficiently. Therefore at idle speeds it isnt really pushing the coolant around the engine but when you give it a rev the increased rotational speed moves some coolant around and causes the temp to drop again. If the pump is or could be old it maybe worth removing it and taking a look for the price of a gasket as thats all ya would need to put it back again if its ok.

Or it could simply be that the tickover speed is too low for the pump to circulate the water. I've come across this problem on other cars.

The effects of air locks tend to be more pronounced at low revs because water has to overcome the bouyancy of the air pocket in order to get past it. As the revs rise there's more pressure available and restriction effects become more important than bouyancy.
One favorite place for an air lock is the top of the radiator. This has to be bled separately from the engine, it should be bled any time the water level has run low and bled again once or twice a year.
