Hi everyone, I have a 2016 M4 that's been drinking a litre of oil every 350 miles, it's currently with BMW and the latest update is they need to drop the subframe to access the engine and turbos. They have used a borescope and identified a lot of oil over the turbos. The car has only done 33k miles, and has always been fully serviced by BM. I'm wondering if anyone else has had the same experience? Any advice will be much appreciated.

Did you fix yours? Not sure how old this post is I am experiencing this now - purchased a 2016 f83 a few weeks ago noticed it drank oil quite quickly!
Seller agreed to go halves on any repair by bm!
Was told one turbo needs replacing and puts the other one too !
Getting the second inspection this weds so will know for sure I’m wondering what it would all cost to do with bmw !?
I’m going to pay half reluctantly but I’m lucky the seller is willing to split with me. Also the o/s diff has a tiny leak too .
Wondering what two turbos could cost !?

Funny thing is that two weeks prior and only 4 days before I bought it (28/11/23) it had an inspection for leak by ardon bmw as part of the sale agreement . They cleared all leaks , I was sent the video and we are on the 18/12/23 and there’s one turbo need changing and possibly the second one too and a small diff leak ..
I based my purchase decision on the first inspection I feel let down by bmw . Not sure whether they are trust worthy

I'd be mentioning that to them.

Second step, finding out what they're going to do about it because I could give an equally st/incorrect report on an M4 and I don't know which end of a spanner is the correct end to hold.

Thirdly, I'd be wondering about contacting Trading Standards if I didn't get a satisfactory response ie they say something like their report should not be relied upon etc etc.

IANAL, mind you.

Oh, remove mention of the company. PH policy.

Im an F82 M4 owner and on the owners groups on Facebook this isn't an unheard of issue, it seems its usually Turbo seals which fail if anything.

I have no idea what BMW would quote, I imagine something quite scary buy replacement turbos (both) can usually be bought for under £1500 for the pair often with upgraded internal parts from a turbo specialist.

It seems there's no rhyme or reason why some go and others don't may be down to abuse by previous owners but there are some who have to get them replaced at low mileage and others with over 100k on the clock still on original turbos.

If it was my car and I wasn't under warranty I'd be going to a independent specialist not a main dealer

When you say seller; do you mean private or trade?

If private - that screams alarm bells to me and that they knew about the issues

If trader - them take it back to them and get them to sort this and not go 'halves' with you - its their responsiblity to sell you a fully working car

Different car but similar issue; my F31 (bought in Jan this year) started leaking oil & burning it on the exhaust mani 2 weeks into ownership; both turbos were leaking/seals had failed. The dealer we bought the car from took it back and got the turbos fully refurbished by a very reputable company and fixed the car for me within 2 weeks

That’s a cynical view Dan, I’d personally try and look at it as a positive thing and decent thing to do by a private seller. As they could tell you where to go and not offer any help at all! People can’t win nowadays.

Not cynical at all - realistic

It could be absolute sods law that this happened and the previous owner is very generous; but there'd always be doubt in my mind that this wasn't sods law and a known issue etc...

Yet the seller was willing to allow an inspection by BMW , in which they gave it a clean bill of health. So who’s at fault , the seller, or BMW for a ste inspection ?…
