Just about any domestic electrician will be able to do the job.
I installed most of mine myself, and got my electrician friend to wire up the ends. The total cost was about £100 (mate did it for free). The cabling is the difficult bit, thats why its usually expensive to get somebody to install it.
The system I have has an additional module now that can send a text message to my phone if anything happens.

What Kit did you buy/use?. I want to do my own too. but using the existing wiring that was in the house before I moved in.
Not sure if this is against Ted's rules, but the company I work for provides just such a (wireless) system...

I installed a Visonic+ at my office mostly wireless sensors it also links to the phone to call me if it goes off, or so I can listen in to the office, or disarm and reset remotly etc.
I would go for a wired system if doing it again. But the door sensors are about £20 each, smoke alarm about £40 you can also get glass break sensors, pir, flood sensor etc. quite intersting really.

Recommend getting a digital smoke alarm linked into the alarm (we had an office fire before) (when it calls you it tells you if its a fire/flood/intruder and which area)
