Have just had induction + cam (not too wild) mod on my Chim. Also Mark Adams "Tornado" chip. I know nothing about ECUs but am told that this one will adjust after some hiccups. Is this true? Or do I HAVE to trail up to Cheltenham or Uxbridge for full RR tune. I hear that a laptop job can be done on the road???

Depends what ECU you have. Assuming it's the same 14CUX jobbie I've got on my TVR, the ECU has a small amount of adaptive fuelling but that applies across the whole map, if you change the engine characteristics significantly (and a cam change plus indiction mods sounds significant to me) you'll need a different map. Mark Adams is pretty smart about setting these up, and if he knew what spec engine the Tornado chip was going in to, he would presumably have given you a chip with a map that was his best guess, based on his experience with similar engines. Mark will probably be able to advise you how close this is likely to be to the optimum for that engine, i.e. whether you definitely need a rolling road session to get it spot on. If you're going to get the map changed, I'm sure you will need to do this on a rolling road, this isn't something you can do just driving around with your mate with a laptop!
I've done mapping on the road and while it sounds OK in the comfort of the Pub, the reality is that you rapidly run out of road whilst trying for anything over half throttle load sites! I'd have to agree with Steve and Pete and say for a proper job usea rolling road its much cheaper in the long run in terms of fuel used and underwear bills!

So you car hasn't been chipped to match the cam and induction mods and yet you claim 385 bhp?
Care to explain as this doesn't stack up with general experience?

I've done some mapping on the road and wouldn't recommend it either, it's virtually impossible to work the keyboard and drive at the same time, however having said that I did get the fuelling to within 5-8 percent this way (not 5-8 percent CO, but to with 5-8 percent of what eventually went on to make maximum power) which I though was a pretty good result. however on the ignition i was a real girls blouse and was quite a way off max power, but that's something you can only dial in on the rollers, it's amazing how much power is lost from only a couple of degrees out - best bit about rollers these days is they hold the revs constant and you can watch the power increase as you wing the advance on and off .. ilke 20 bhp changes over relatively small advance changes. fantastic to watch

Steve Guilty as charged! Just the first figure that came into my head. Seriously though these manufacturers' power figures seem to be not just inaccurate but wildly out. Where the hell do they get them? The odd "spike" perhaps or a trace of NO! I have a genuine 360+ Chim500 and it is not easy to achieve so please don't pluck figures from the air you raise hopes falsely. You can expect about 30bhp from your modified CH 4L if in good mechanical order but a RR test is essential however well it seems to go. A logical next step is to uprate to 4.6 but you need to consider the cost and if you would be better off buying a larger capacity car. As it is a second car try a classic such as a V8S--very satisfying. Heaven knows where the manufacturers get their figures perhaps they are just dyno readings--subtract 10% + 10bhp at least.

while we're on the subject of how the timing affects power figures,my 4.0hc ,i'm told had the ignition retarded so that it can run on 95 ron unleaded.i now use optimax all the time (to the sad extent of getting maps of where all the shell garages are on a run!!)so can someone tell me how much power i am currently losing.i'm also having a 6000 mile service in the next couple of weeks,so would they(offord) adjust the timing as part of the service to run on optimax,or do they just check the timing and advise of any adjustment needed?? thanks for any feedback..met(feeling retarded)

I suspect he means PHP, not BHP. 1 BHP is approximately 1.5 PHP (Pub Horsepower).
