Tom Cruise squrting - a new celebrity sport?

Tom Cruise is presing assault charges against the presenter and four strong crew of a new Channel4 "Comedy" prank show after he was squirted in the face at the premiere of War of the Worlds a couple of days ago.
Some have accused him if having no sense of humour, while others say fair enough.
I think that the idiots behind these kinds of shows need a damn good thumping - it's not clever and is only a pathetic attempt to humiliate someone famous.
For all Tom knew (and he is an oddball anyway) he might have just been squirted in the face with acid by a deranged fan.
I never could stand Dennis Pennis - who also just liked to try to humiliate people.
I actually find these kinds of shows embarrassing and they do nothing for the reputation of the country.
So what do you think? Should Tom press charges? Am I right?

The guys with the water pistols sound like tw@s, but I reckon pressing assault charges is pointless.
Got to disagree there...while he was sometimes a bit hit and miss, I think generally he wasn't trying to humiliate people, just prick some over inflated egos...things like asking Michael Heseltine if the only harmony in the Tory party was his hairspray.

The one that really got me was when he said to Steve Martin - "How come you don't make funny films anymore?"
Steve Martin just looked so sad.
I really despise this kind of cruel humour - the inadequates that watch it are just as bad as the inadequates that make it.
Apparently the Channel 4 show the Cruise stunt was being filmed for is a new "Comedy" in which pranks are played on celebrities. Oh my sides. How very clever...

Totally agree with this - squirting water into celebs face just not funny. Not particularly worried about the celeb as they are on such high pedestals that they deserve the odd fall, but if it ain't funny then it ain't funny.
But Dennis Pennis was a completely different kettle of fish. OK sometimes he over stepped the mark - but he was mostly ad libbed and that can always go wrong - but most of his questions/stroke comments were in-jokes that the celebs just didn't get - "Hey Tom(Hanks), about Forest - how do you think they'll get on without Stan Collymore next year" - complete look of confusion on Tom's face and we're all laughing our nuts off. And hardly offensive.
TBH I agree with Tom Cruise. Whatever you may think about the guy, he isn't aloof and distant like other Hollywood stars. He likes meeting fans, talking to people, chatting over other people's mobiles, signing way more autographs than other actors. His walkabouts are received very positively.
He was actually in the middle of giving an interview with the guy with the squirting microphone. He's courteous enough to give interviews to just about anyone who wants one. As a result, IMO it was incredibly rude.
I do get annoyed where comedy programmes seem to think mere rudeness is funny. I get bored when I see sitcoms where everyone just swears, when you compare them to the work-of-art insults on Blackadder.
Prank shows like Just For Laughs and Dom Joly's shows are funny because they are about surprise, not humiliation or being offensive. I can't see this humiliation show on C4 being funny.

This is the one that went really wrong - Dennis Pennis (Paul Kaye I think) said afterwards that Steve Martin had been a hero of his and that he really regretted this very impromtu comment - again a symptom of the spontanaity of what he was doing but hardly something to hang him with considering all the funny ones. If you don't push the limits of comedy you'll just end up stuck with Terry and June.

I thought that Cruise handled it brilliantly, just imagine if he went off on one like Two Jags did with the egg incident. Very restrained and completely humiliated the guy too.
I think this crossed the line. Even you or I would be annoyed if someone did this (unsolicited, unexpected, and especially in that situation).
I think Tom Cruise is right to make an example of it and right to use the law, not his fists at the time. Hopefully it will stop the show being moved forward
