My partner has always wanted a WRX STI. Anyways we found one local and paintwork is excellent. However The engine bay is very dirty. Should the engine with this sort of miles look like this?

Looks grubby for the mileage. Lot of bent fins on the intercooler too. And the seal near the bottom of the widescreen should be black. Looks a funny colour. Over spray maybe? Have you got a link for the car?

Forgot to mention she has already bought it. Car has the three services each year from Subaru dealer.
On another point. Not sure if the car has been sitting for a while. But the brakes are very poor/noisy at stopping at low speed. Suggested it needed a good bit of hooning to clear them. Did a bit tonight and it helped. Will go for a good run this wknd. Hopefully this will sort them before she takes it to work on Monday..

Whats the mileage would be a better indication rather than age ! Also some owners don't care about the hidden from view bits.

I see noting untoward at all.. depends on how and where the car has been. That big scoop out front if driven around dust or sand etc will cover the engine like that. Mine did and did I care?

Ok thanks..
Been out in it on Saturday and happy to report that the brakes do feel better but still not 100% happy with them. Gonna phone the Subaru dealership it was serviced at on Monday and see if it’s had a break fluid change. I’ve got a printed note of the three services carried out by the dealership but nothing on the actual work carried out.

Think I’ve found the culprit. Closer inspection of the pads reveal

UPDATE.

Car was booked in for new disks and pads under warranty which were fitted today. As I was coming home on the dual carriageway I thought I had picked up a puncture as the car started to behave strangely i.e noisy. I was about to pull in after the roundabout but whatever it was cleared itself. When I finally got home I checked the car and noticed the rear disks were hot and burnt round the hub. Anyways pulled the handbrake on full a few times and some braking and went out on it again and it looks to have cleared. Anything I should worry about.

Someone mentioned these brakes may be Carbon ?

No carbon brakes on any Subaru. There could be a bit in the pad material, but those discs are metal smile

My wife has a 2016 STI with Just 11k, and her engine bay looks much the same. I think the scoop adds to this dirt. We also have bent fins on the IC.

I'd suggest going to another dealer. Yours are 1 piece metal discs, not carbon. Did they charge you 5k plus for new discs? If not, you don't have carbon brakes. You can even see through the wheels you don't have separate top hats for the carbon rotor to attach to smile

The parts/service department quoted 2k to replace disks and pads. I think the steel disks have a higher amount of carbon on the disk. He said the disks should last 100k miles..

Don't buy discs from main dealer. There's better value kits out there.

They do look good. However the disk and pads are being fitted under warranty..
