2.0 zetec, possible power output
Discussion
What are the tuning possibilities for a 2.0 zetec and at what cost? Only two restraints, I can only have up to 95dB and must comply with emissions regulations.
I allready saw in another post Jamesg20 is running 177bhp, but if I read correctly this is without cat so that could pose problems with emissions I suppose.

Hi again !
The cat does strangle power in the setup i'm afriad. It stops the engine revving properly and just removing it makes a big difference. However as you say you probably need to keep it. The plenum system is betterthan the standard ford one but again it does not have a tuned length. Basically you would be looking for a set of dcoe 45mm throttle bodied to replace it with. You already have programmable ecu so thats cool. Next i would recommend ditching the ginetta exhaust and manifold as it is made on a budget rather than performance and get a custom one made. The standard manifold is very poor for engine breathing im afraid. after that you are into cam changes and uprating con rod bolts etc.
However, a standard engined car is not slow. Even the 1800 factory demonstrator i drove was fairly quick. So don't go splashing your money until you have the standard engine running correctly as i think you may be suprised. To be honest in my opinion correct gera ratios would make more of a difference than more power but could you live with a close ratio straight cut gearbox on the road?
Also 177hp in such a light car is indeed very quick, you can only go so fast on the road....
hope this helps.

Would agree with James on waiting till you get the car sorted out first (especially after your other thread). The G20 has very low mass, so doesn't need as much to push it around. Also highly tuned NA engines generally suffer in low revs and coff out nasty emissions with lots of noise.
I have seen the 2litre zetec running 238bhp (estimated) at the flywheel and installed in a G4.. infact it is now in the classifieds on PH, but with the engine de-tuned ( www.pistonheads.com/sales/44396.htm ). That was with some serious money spent on it from a race team that knew what they were doing. It will also fail emissions tests and volume tests, even with a very flexible tester.

I agree setting it up correctly first is priority. But I'm just trying to get a feel of the long term potential of the G20. It would be nice after roaddriving and trackdaying it for some time, to be able to upgrade it to 170 - 180 bhp for that extra little bit of spice.
200bhp and more seems unattainable with emissions and dB restraints, maybe even unnecesary for non racing purposes.

There's a Miata (MX-5) powered G-20 in Texas with an Eaton supercharger and custome intake producing close to 200 HP at the tires. This same system on the Miata is fully emission legal with cats and offers better throttle response and drivability than stock. There are pics and info here

Anyway I'd prefer the Ford for a naturally aspirated application, but the MX-5 engine is great for forced induction.

If you really want to know, speak to Richard Hollebon at Richmond Racing, he fitted and tuned a 2.0 litre zetec in his G27R, when they precursored the current G20 cars. It then went on to compete in the Banks Europa series (now K&N Filters or similar) and he even beat a Porsche around Croft
Admittedly the track conditions were a little wet!!!
e-mail me if you want his e-mail addres.. or of course look on the richmond racing website for contact details.

Hi,
I bought my G27 (S3) from Alan Fereday in UK and imported it to Belgium.
It was first registered in UK in 1997.
According to the specifications Alan gave me when I was considering the purchase of my car, I should have 165 bhp from my 2000 cc zetec engine (45 webers and no cat) ... it has been registered in Belgium during last summer without a cat on and without problems although being very loud.
This engine is very powerfull and can still be used on the road.
He's also someone to ask questions about Ginettas (www.feredaycars.co.uk)
Cheers, Stefano
