What does this measure?

I've had this measuring cup in the back of the cupboard for ages but can't figure out what it measures.



It has a pouring spout the other side so is presumably intended for liquids, and is marked "250 gr" and "500 gr".

I just measured the 500 gr line as about 225g of water, so I guess it's a US cup (236ml), but I can't think of any common ingredient where a cup would be 500g, a cup of flour is only about 120g.

I would guess calibration marks are to indicate the amount of water needed to be added to something else, eg the 500gr mark indicating the amount of water that would be needed to add to 500gr of flour.

That does sound feasible but it would mean that the cup is specific to one recipe.

i.e. 500gr of substance takes the same volume as 225g of water.
Twice the density not 0.5. That would be 500gr of substance takes the same volume as 1kg of water.

Hunting online I found this very similar looking one as a Kenwood spare, so I guess it must have come with the Kenwood Chef.

Well gr is used for grain,gross or gram

Its the metric equivalent of fluid ounces, its for measuring while baking, mainly measuring flour or sugar. It should say on it what its for.
