Everything you need to know is here

https://www.gov.uk/importing-vehicles-into-the-uk/...

From the above link:

If you’re importing a second-hand vehicle, you will not have to pay VAT if all the following apply:

VAT has already been paid in any EU country or the UK
the vehicle has been in use for more than 6 months
the vehicle has done more that 6,000km (about 3,728 miles)

Charges for registering in the UK will depend on its age if less than 10 years old and whether it has type approval if not, else you’ll be looking at £450 for an IVA test in addition to the usual £55 first registration fee.

Have you a specific vehicle in mind?
There's a model I like that can be cheaper in Italy as it was made there, and so more common but I've no idea about importing and how I would check it over before handing over the money is another matter altogether.
