Was just seeing if anyone else has posted this. Very sad news and sounds very serious with severe head trauma. The bikes that he uses have always seemed awfully low (I understand why). Prayers for him big time.

Oh f
ks sake 2020 this is just stupid. Please don't take one of the very few people left on this planet who I have both great respect and honest admiration for.
I would normally never dream of posting anything like this normally but this world needs people like Alex, lets hope he pulls through.

He's undergone neurosurgery and is now in intensive care.
An Italian friend of mine told me about the crash soon after it happened:
'It looks like the accident was rotten luck. The competitors were approaching the end of the stage at Montalcino where the road slopes down gently and bends, and Alex went wide at the bend and into the opposite carriageway just as a lorry was approaching. The lorry driver tried to brake but didn't have enough time.'
Madness that the road wasn't closed for the event.

Alessandro Zanardi was involved in a serious road accident during a handbike race in the town of Pienza, in Tuscany.
Already amputated in both legs following a terrible accident during a race in 2001, the Italian was transported by helicopter to the hospital in Siena where he arrived at around 6 p.m.
The exact circumstances of the accident are still unknown. However, the Italian daily La Repubblica indicates that the accident involved a "heavy vehicle". According to the first elements reported by the local media, it seems that Alex Zanardi, in a half-curve descent to the right, lost control, sliding on the opposite lane where a truck arrived.
UPDATE 9 p.m .: Francesco Giovanni Bova, director of emergencies at Le Scotte hospital in Siena says: "His condition is very serious due to the serious head trauma and he is currently undergoing delicate neurosurgery. "
UPDATE 10:25 p.m .: The hospital of Siena indicates by a press release: "the neurochirgucal and maxillofacial intervention began shortly after 7 p.m. and ended shortly before 10 p.m. The patient was transferred to intensive care, with a poor prognosis. His state of health is very serious ”.

Thats definitely bad timing, Alex is featured in the most recent Beyond The Grid (f1) podcast and came across as an inspirational figure. Best wishes to him!
I was home early yesterday and was listening to this while doing a spot of weeding, most probably while it took place which is slightly surreal. Was intending to tell the mrs it's a must-listen (for anyone actually regardless if F1 fans) when she informed me of the news from Twitter.Hope he pulls through.
