Hi All

delving back into classics having sold 964 and miss having an older P

ok fancy doing the 928 thing as love big V8's

so I am undecided if late 928's are more enjoyable as Manuals or Autos

any input appreciated and welcomed

thanks in advance..

Isn't the 928 GTS in manual form as rare as hens teeth?

Manual everyone goes for nowadays as investors and more reliable but FWIW to actually drive an auto suits this model imo. Manual very sought after as so few speced

And won’t be a patch on your 964. But another one wink

I beg to differ - a sorted manual GTS is more than a patch on a 964. But it’s also different... So a bit like comparing apples and oranges. Both cars wear a Porsche badge. Both are fabulous engineering products. But one of them is a sports car and the other a GT/sports car.

One of them would thrill you for an hour or two, and then would chew you and spit you out. The other one would deliver the same pace cross country with a mere shrug of the shoulders and ask you to go on. And on, and on till you reach the South of France in one go.

I would not have an Auto 928 - it’s a great car, but the 5-spd, either in a very early form or very late - GT/GTS is one of the best cars Porsche ever produced.

5spd GTS are very rare - 42 ever produced between 1992 and 1995. Thus they are priced accordingly.

P.S. 928s are like marmite. You either get them or you don’t.

I have had 3 928s and done over 60k in them. One S4 (auto), and a manual and auto GTS. Definitely auto for me having had both. My manual GTS was an ex Porsche GB demo so nearly new but odd spaced pedals and clunky* box. I swapped it for an auto and that was a dream car. Wish I still had it (sold for £17k with fewer than 50k miles on the clock)

  • clunky compared to other Porsches I have had.

Was your 5-spd GTS red or silver by any chance?

As for the clunkyness - yes, not as good as a G50 box, but the 4spd Auto kills the sporting spirit of the 928...

2 x 5 spd GTS (one a race car)
1 x 5spd S4
ex 928 S2 Auto
ex 928 S2 5spd

in total about 70k in all of them...

I grew up around a 928 S and SC Targa run side by side. Loved them both but that 911 carries the sporting Porsche DNA for me. I'd have a 928 if I had space. Important and beautiful design and still looks so modern. Design icon.

OP you should drive both manual and auto for yourself. I would before spending that sort of money.

I think I know where your car is - Porsche GB did three 5-spd press cars throughout the life of the model - a 1992 Guards Red, a 1993 Polar Silver (mine) and your 1994 Black... The GR changed hands recently, mine has just been restored to factory original condition and the Black one is part of a collection.
