what's the car you always wanted?
Discussion
for me it's actually the elise! sad i know but when i bought my mx5 it was because i couldn't afford an elise at the time. always looked at the elise and thought - hell i want one of those. it's a bit exclusive, looks great and no one could tell you what it costs unless they're an elise nut.
everyone knows what a Z4 or Z3 or mx5 etc costs but drive up in an elise and the perception is that you've got a far flasher motor than the bmw guy! lol
anyway - what car did you lot want

An original AC Cobra was the thing for years, along with a helicopter. That was my benchamark for 'when I'd made it'.
Once I grew up a bit, the FTO was something I lusted after. I bought one, they're very good cars, very nible, pretty fast, more practical than they look. They are starting to look a bit dated, and they don't hold up well to track (ab)use.
Recently I came across the Dare Uk Ginetta G4 and fell in love. However, after a closer inspection and a test drive, I realised that while you do get a lot of kit for your money (adjustable suspension, braided hose lines, etc, etc all as standard) and it's a very exclusive brand (never seen one on the road IRL); they are very poorly built, they have to have big holes in the side windows to allow you in with the roof on (no door handles), so was just a bit too impractical - when it rains it's dryer on the outside of the car
My 'comprimise' is the Elise. Still a rare and exclusive marque, fantastic to drive, decent chassis, holds up on the track, soft top, secure, dry ... what more could you want?
The current 'fantasy car' for me right now though, has to be the Noble M400. Just a shame I will never be able to afford to keep one if I did manage to buy one
A Marcos Mantis would be nice, if you're offering?
Never really taken to the normal marques either - I have very servier inverted badge snobbery. I've never like Farrari or Porche, though I am starting to warm to the early 911s and I sat in some farrari or other recently and it was quite nice.

I have always liked Lotus. When I saw my first Elise, that was it. I saw one of the first Mk1's in bright orange outside a restaurant near Wimborne. I must have looked at this thing for 30-40 mins and decided it was the most perfect car I had ever seen. The only trouble is that I dont like K engines.
I finally earned enough and the toyota engine started to be used and that was that. I am the proudest owner of an 111R.
As it is, the 111R is my dream car.
No other car comes close and the only other car that would get a look in is an ultima, or if they ever produced it, the chrysler atlantic (the most beautiful ever concieved).

Hi all,
Every since I can remember I've wanted a Lotus, like what's already been posted I've lusted after one since James bond (May be something for Lotus to think about when they make there next supercar)
All the kid's on the road's Nr where I live are now all Lotus nut's I've made sure of it (& Norman from Ntc Cars) why on earth would I want anything else
I wouldn't want anything else other than a Lotus even if money was no object, may be a Tvr or a Marcos but there'd just be addition's I'd still make sure I had a Lotus
Boggy

where to start!
assuming money no object, here's my (large) garage:
Rob Walker's Ferrari 250 GT SWB
silver Porsche 993 Carrera 4
dark blue Maserati Bora
black Lamborghini Espada
red Integrale Evo II
kermit green Exige S2
titanium T350 with 4 litre engine
titanium Tuscan S
Alfasud Ti
Lancia Stratos
Bentley Continental R-Type
Caterham R500 evo
Land Rover Defender (with V8) (for shopping and winter days)
Ford Mustang GT390 (Bullitt)
Porsche 911 2.7RS
MKII Escort, rally car with full house Vauxhall 2 litre
and, of course,
McLaren F1
I could, at a push obviously (and I feel I'm betraying some cars here), settle for
F1,
250GT SWB,
Espada,
Tuscan S,
Stratos,
Land Rover,
993 Carrera 4

Ferrari F40 (string for handles and all).....always loved the stripped down barebones racing type car with no luxuries - hence I was attracted to the 111R and Exige S2......
These cars hace stereos, boot space, padded seats, carpets and if you want them electric windows - as much as they are a little harsh and impractical compared to family saloons, I wouldn't call them stripped out barebones racing style cars.
Now, if you spec'ed one with fixed doors, fixed plastic windows, winddeflector and a carbon fibre version of the inside of an iron maiden for the seats, then you'd have somethinglike a stripped down barebones racing type car
The Elise 111S I sold 10 weeks ago.
Why did I sell it? Why did I sell it?... Idiot.
Aside from that, a 111R would be nice, and I agree on the 355 Spyder, or perhaps a 360 Spyder. Lots of other cars I'd buy, given the £20M lottery rollover win, but the aforementioned would be a start.

There's aways been a list for me, so not so much dream car as heirarchy
But the one at the very top, the one I'd have over all others would have to be the McLaren F1. It has the pedigree, exclusiveness, the motivation to be the best road car. Nothing is wasted, it weights as much as it has to and no more, it looks incredible and by all accounts goes the same. I can't see something that uses the internal combustion engine beating it. Ever.
And just to make it perfect, I know there is absolutely zero chance of me ever having one. Surely the definitive dream car should be just that, a dream. Otherwise where would you go from there?

First car I ever really wanted was the Lotus Europa - the best bit in a film called 11 Harrowhouse is when the Lotus is chased in the grounds of a country estate and escapes through a concrete pipe, then a Lambo Countach - the beginning of Cannonball Run, then the Esprit, and then the Elise... So now I am really happy... Still wouldn't mind a Lambo though. Diablo Roadster (have a look at the one in Exit Wounds with DMX in the showroom... it virtually does
But the Elise is such a close second.... FANTASTIC
