July Motor Sport Mag "Brock At Spar 1986."
Discussion
Read about the (MHTD) Mobil Holden Dealer Team, assault on Europe & the Spa 24hr event in 1986 with Brock Moffat (That F**d guy). Also Gricey in the Chickadee sponsored Commodore. In the July issue of Motor Sport.
The cars were Quick & ran at the front for some of the races, but reliability was the problem, then as they went to Spar, Holden & Brock were having the big disagreement over the “ Energy Polariser” which didn’t help & lead later to the split between Brock & Holden.
The HDT cars had head gasket problems, found out later to be a revised casting process that had caused water galleries in the cylinder heads to be restricting flow. The Grice car spent to many races in the sand traps and twice lost a wheel at Spar. Both Teams found the weather conditions a problem also, especially the snow when they raced at Donington. Some of the guys had never seen snow.
The 3 Aussie cars finished in formation and picked up the Coupe du Roi Trophy for the first Team home.
Although the cars never won a race, the crowds loved the sound of the V8s & the sideways driving of Allan Grice.
The sponsor of the Graeme Bailey Allan Grice Commodore was Chickadee Chicken, a Company close to my home of Gosford on the Central Coast of NSW, called Wyoming. This car went on to win Bathurst in 1986.
